Question: how recent of activity does it show? I have a newer site, so it being limited to just a day or so is a bit restrictive for this to be an effective tool for me. Can it be extended to older activity?

Activity shows up immediately and will be retained for as long as you want. There is a setting to determine how long to keep the data, so you can have it cleaned out after 30 days, 60 days, 1 year, whatever.

The tool will only start showing activity that occurs after installation. It's not going to pick up topics from a year ago (for example).

I want to retroactive enable the Newsletter for all my members. Due to a database issue members who subscribed was deactiavted somehow. Database is now fixed

Question: How can I activate the Newsletter for ALL existing members of my community? Any hack in the database, but what field?

That's... weird. I'm not sure how that could happen, but... OK. Anyway, all you have to do is set the default groups on the newsletter properties, and everyone will be subscribed - unless they actively unsubscribed.

Can you elaborate on the database issue? What table(s) were affected? If the newsletters_subscriptions table was not affected, you should be fine with just editing that property.

Interested in purchasing this, but some questions first:

    1. Am I able to auto-opt in all existing members to the newsletter upon installation?
    2. Do I get to see a preview of the auto-created messages so I can adjust certain links/text before distribution? (i.e. If I dont want certain recent topics to be sent, can I remove?)
    3. Is there an online working demo I can view/test out?

    Thanks!

    1. Yes.
    2. You can see a preview, but you can't edit it (unless it's manually written content). You can exclude specific forums from the list, but you can't exclude individual topics.
    3. No.

@HeadStand - many thanks for this app, it works great and I can see it helping our community engagement. A few questions:

    1. Is it possible to pull through posts rather than topics? Or otherwise, is it possible to put the date of the latest post against a topic rather than it's start date?
    2. Is it possible to customise the plain text template for the dynamic content? For some reason my plain text newsletter looks terrible, plus I'd like to add URLs
    3. Do you have plans to enable selection of "Our Picks" as a content inclusion criteria? I'm experimenting with this functionality and that would be a good way to exert editorial control over what goes out.

    Thanks in advance!

    1. I'm working on this, but no ETA yet.
    2. No. The plain text template IS going to look terrible, and it will be used in a very small number of situations. Most email clients by now are able to read and format HTML... in fact, I may remove plain-text altogether (since it's so obsolete). And no, you can't add URLs, that's the point of plain text. 😉
    3. Not at this time.

Thank you for your reply. 🙂

I'm just using the default mail sending features built into IPS right now. I'm not really familiar with SendGrid.

I would be extremely surprised if the entire forum ever routinely broke 50 posts a day--though that might happen a few times a year during events. We've got almost 400 members, and in the 4 months the forum has been open our busiest day saw 27 posts.

So, about 15 posts a day on average?

I am going to work on this, but no ETA. If you don't hear from me by end of this week, please PM me to remind me. Thanks.

Also have an issue where I'm using 2 ad slots and manually selected the ad for each out of 2 choices. However, even though I manually selected, it doesn't show the correct ad, it shows the other one of the two instead...very odd behavior. Basically, it's not selecting the correct ad under manual. I tested a few times sending and it's random even though manual is selected.

A new version has been uploaded to the Marketplace. It contains a fix for these issues.

    @HeadStand,

Hello. I hope you are doing well. I'm not sure if a notification properly fired off for the above message, so I decided to quote it again.

    Have a great evening.

The problem with including the full text of every post is that you may hit some limits with regard to storage (of the issue content) and, if you're using an API like SendGrid, with the request size. How much activity are we talking about? How many posts, on average?

I seem to have an issue when using an advertisement in a newsletter. I'm using only one image (without turning on smaller image versions) and a url. It displays the ad 3 times in the newsletter with a bullet next to each ad.

Can you list for me (or take a screenshot) of all the content types in your newsletter? I don't need details, just a screenshot of the "Manage Content" screen. I'd like to set up the same configuration that you have so that I can try to replicate it.

Is it possible to measure a campaign statistics, in SparkPost, using these feature ?

Should be. When you set up the bulk mail, you enter the campaign ID. All emails for that bulk mail will be flagged with that campaign and SparkPost will track it accordingly.

My community takes approximately 2 hour to send 55k e-mails... Your application goes to Background Tasks, when running ?

    Yes.

Is your application compatible with it ?

I think so, but to be honest, I haven't tested it.

I'm looking at this and also the other one on the market place that restores using sparkpost api as well but only that. Yours has more features, correct? I'm trying to understand if I'll use those features though. Any feedback from anyone on this app? How you use these additional features?  Is this an app or plugin?

    It's an app.

I like the suppression list management, so I can remove a user if they are suppressed and not receiving emails?

    Correct.

On 9/2/2018 at 11:26 AM, AlexWebsites said:

When are the additional features coming?

When I have a little more customer interest in the mod. I invested quite a bit of time in it, only to be beaten to the punch by 2 days by someone else. 😞 I had hoped for more purchases. If sales pick up, I'll happily put in more time to develop other features.

    @HeadStand,

Hello! When adding a "Forum" content block, what's the intended difference between "Recent Content" and "Recently Updated Content?"

I'm thinking if I want the newsletter to feature all content from the last 24 hours, including both new posts and replies to existing posts, I should be using Recently Updated Content, with a cutoff of 1 day.

    Is that correct?

EDIT: Right now I'm just getting the first message from each thread with an indication of the number of replies displayed. I need to be able to pull in the actual full text of the replies.

Recent Content sorts by start date, Recently Updated sorts by last updated date.

I don't think you're going to see the reply text. That would require a custom modification. You can see the text of the content item (the topic), but not replies.

Anyway to suppress the duplicate title and question directly underneath i the pop up?

I have to provide a title for the dialog. Long questions get truncated, which is why I put them underneath as well.

Second, how do we edit the tab name? I don't see any way to edit in the menu manager.

You need to edit the language string (ACP -> Customization -> Languages). The one you're looking for is called frontnavigation_faq.

    possible bug?
    the page at url /newsletters/

    not listing any newsletters?

It should only list the newsletters you can see.... are they all enabled? Does your group have permission to it?

  11. New version is uploaded to the Marketplace. Changes include:

    • Sorting issue with the "Recent Clubs" content. Fixed.
    • Added confirmation page when unsubscribing from a newsletter
    • Extended all member ID columns to allow for larger values

As I understand, I have to "publish the newsletter" before it gets send out automatically?

Definitely not. The whole point is that it's supposed to be automatic. A publish will do an immediate distribution, which is probably not what you want.

On 8/12/2018 at 6:08 AM, Gnuru said:

What I also noticed, is that if I add more then one content (in manage content) it will only show the last added content. The newsletter itselfs includes the other contents.

Is this still a problem? I'm not able to reproduce it.

On 8/12/2018 at 8:28 AM, AlexWebsites said:

@HeadStand for clubs block, recent content isn't really working. I'd like to be able to show latest clubs created, is there an easy way to do this? There are only 2 options, recent and popular and both output the same feed.

Looks like this is a bug with the way the content is sorted. I have fixed it locally and I will push a new version in another day or 2. I just want to see what these other few issues are first.

We initially imported member info from our previous platform (Yahoo Groups), which accounts for my bizarrely high member ID number.

I think that's the problem right there... the system is probably not able to accept a value that high. I'll have to make some database changes to account for that.

  14. On 8/7/2018 at 9:29 AM, John T Davis said:

I also noticed the version number didn't seem to change with this update. It's still at version 2.0.1. (There are now two version 2.0.1 files available. I think the marketplace may have glitched.)

Version numbers only get incremented when there is a database change. There were none. Keeping the version number was intentional.

    @HeadStand,

Hello again. I tested this a bit more, with members belonging to my beta test group both as their primary group and their secondary group, and I never could get the subscriber list to populate. I didn't see anything in the manual that indicated I was doing something wrong.

I've attached some screenshots, showing the settings for this particular newsletter, the subscriber list, and the member list for the Feature Beta Test Group I'm trying to distribute the newsletter to.

I feel like I'm missing something obvious.

    Untitled 5.png

    Untitled 6.png

    Untitled 7.png

    1. The subscriber list uses the primary member group only. It does not take secondary groups into account.
    2. Are all of those members opted in to emails? When you view their notification settings in the ACP, do they have "send me news and information" checked? The newsletter will not send anything to someone who has opted out of emails.
  15. A new version has been uploaded to the Marketplace. Changes include:

    • Error when viewing subscriber list. Fixed.
    • Images were not showing up in the newsletters for Image blocks. Fixed.
    • Club blocks generated an error. Fixed.
    • Additional sort in the content type - recently updated content

    Hello again,

I've now published a test newsletter, but I just got a "Delivery Failed" notice, informing me there were no subscribers. That surprised me a bit since I designated a test group to receive the test newsletter, so I went to look at the "Subscribers" page in the newsletter settings.

I received EX1054 with the following traceback:

My IPS Kung Fu is weak, so I have no idea what could be causing this. I'm guessing it's looking for an "Array" column in a database, and that column does not exist?

I fixed this error in the patch I just pushed, but that wouldn't explain why you have no subscribers. The code to display them in a list and the code to queue are actually different. You would not have hit this error during distribution.

Is it possible to make it so that multiple sets can be required?

Switching to another deletes the choices you picked in the previous.

No. If you need fields from 2 sets, just create a 3rd set that includes all the fields from both sets. You CAN have one field belong to multiple sets.

Does this work with the add marker section in member map

I would like to add some fields to the add marker page

    https://www.walkingfootball.com/membermap/markers/group/11-friendlies/

    Thanks

I'm honestly not sure, as I don't have the code to Member Map. It automatically detects anything that is classified as a "content item", but I don't know if the member markers are counted as that.

    @HeadStand,

Hello again. I'm setting up a test letter now. I haven't tried to test anything yet, but so far so good. Thanks for actual manual included with the software. It's awesome.

I had a quick question. If I'm inserting Topic-type content, and ask it to draw from a category (i.e.: one of the categories that forums are listed under on the main Forums page of IPS), will that capture the topics from all the forums belonging to that category?

Or do I need to list off the individual forums?

    Thanks!

You need to list off the individual forums.

    @HeadStand,

Hello! Thanks so much for all the hard work you've put into this. I've not purchased yet, but I can tell from the Marketplace page and the discussion here that it's a really complex app code-side. Your update speed and customer service is super-impressive.

I'm looking to purchase this for a ~300-400 member private community (professional organization) that just migrated from Yahoo Groups. Most of our members were set up to get daily digests from Yahoo that contained a table of contents at the top with every single post for Time Period X (daily or weekly). Clicking the link would get you a full text copy of the post inside the email, so you never had to go to the website if you didn't want to.

Can I replicate that with Newsletters? This is the one thing people miss from Yahoo--the ability to see all content without ever leaving the daily/weekly digest email.

I looked through the pics in the thread but didn't see anything focusing in on the full-text messages.

(Our membership and traffic is small enough that the emails are a managable size. Maybe 30 posts a day max, usually. Often less. We use the default IPS mail stuff.)

    Thanks!

You should be able to replicate this.

When you set up your newsletter you have the option to include the post content in the email. You can choose to truncate it or include the full text.

The "click to show" will be slightly tricky, but you can add some JavaScript to your newsletter template to accomplish this... though it may not work with all email clients.

  19. New version has been pushed to the marketplace. Changes include:

    • Adjustments to image sizing in default newsletter template.
    • Newsletter was sending to members that were pending validation. Fixed.

If I'm on the beta, I won't get the automatic update notifications, right?

I don't have automatic update notifications. Just follow this topic, I always post when there's an update.

  21. 8 minutes ago, CheersnGears said:

@HeadStand I got it working in Outlook by changing the image tag to.  I run my images at 300px, but you get the idea.

    <img src="{$image}" width="300" style="width:100%; height:auto; max-width: 300px;........>

Thanks. I have some minor fixes coming in the next couple of days, so I'll include this.

    Hi @HeadStand

After the recent update to Newsletters, i'm now getting broken images appearing in my newsletters.

    For example

    74640365_2018-07-2516_47_14-WeeklyAdelaideNewsletter-deejaymadd@gmail.com-Gmail.jpg.f9a7d5a1d81b0981ca7af5c0dff08cdc.jpg

It appears regardless which browser or app I view the emails in.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

From a screenshot? No. I'd need to see the HTML source to see where the images are pointing to. Do you have a customized template for your content type?
