  1. While you may not have a need for the community hosting, many customers do :)

We didn't just decide "hey, let's change the hosting packages structure!" it was based on feedback from customers and observations of how the majority of our hosting customers operate their boards :)
Amongst other things, customers would often say "What kind of package should I get?" - we would then ask how many users they expect to have online at a time and advise them based on that - the new way is just easier for those people.

Of course, if you had a license you could use one of the website hosting packages, which have no online user limit - and instead, have traditional bandwidth limits.

To answer your question about dedicated servers: yes. The advanced packages use either VPS or dedicated severs. Dedicated servers are also available through our custom solutions.

  2. May be good for those who don't hold a license yeah. From a licensed customer's perspective, it's a ripoff. No offense.

It is not intended for people with a license :)

Licenses start at $149.99 and cost $25 every 6 months - for very small boards, this is expensive - whereas $10 per month is much more feasible.

  3. And I do think that 3 tickets a week complaining about something really does indicate that that's the majority's opinion.

Indeed, if someone contacts every other day saying they are confused by a feature - that feature needs to be changed.

We of course know that some people don't like change, and so gave those people instructions to change it back.

People will throw their rattles out of the pram, but I think (and thank you to Putzy, Wolfie and Kotonoha for agreeing) that the decision to change it was justified, and the options we have for you to change it back are reasonable.

  4. Sorry, I have to call BS on this. I have nearly 20,000 members on my forum and nobody has EVER complained to me that "View New Posts" is confusing. Seriously, what the heck is confusing about it?

    ...

Oh come on, the majority. That's nonsense. This change is more about coder ego and has nothing to do with what a majority thinks.

    ...

We get regular tickets about it (I'd estimate about 3 per week). Feel free to "call BS" or say it's "nonsense", but we did ;)

We don't just change things for the fun of it, or to annoy you or due to "coder ego" (whatever the hell that means).
  5. :(

Unfortunately, this thread is evidence we can't please everyone - people found the old way confusing, so it was changed - now other people don't like the new way.

Again, if you don't like view new content, just change it back. I even offered to do it for you ;)

You do have to realise though, things do get changed over time - while we can appreciate that not everyone is going to love these changes, we have to go by the majority of the feedback we get, which I'm sure you can understand :)

You, rbiss, might not "give a crap" - but that doesn't change the opinion of the many, many people who appreciate the change ;)

  6. Go to the bug tracker ("Tracker" at the top of the forums) and report it under the New Site project.

It should be appearing for you. Make sure to show them the screen shot as well, so they can verify the issue.

Wofie :D I know you mean well, but if you're not 100% sure on something, please don't suggest things :) It's quite normal to see only the paid category on that page.

Dirtbagz, your ticket will be answered soon if it hasn't been already - please wait for that response :)

  7. I've been talking about this since the first day of IP3 previews in 2008. My hunch is now supported by feedback from my membership.

View New Posts and Today's Active Posts.

View New Content is a step down from View New Posts. Not sure what prompted it but it makes no sense. People want to follow their own threads through that feature. Was it that difficult to keep their own read posts in it? I'm trying to understand the logic for making that change.

Both of the above also need reference to the original posters in threads.

Without reverting back to those features it doesn't matter how much better the rest of the board is. They immediately detract from what should be a huge leap forward.

Many people found the old method confusing, and we used to receive many tickets about it. That is why it was changed, and I can't imagine it being changed back.
There is an article on IPS Resources to revert it back to the old behaviour if you're so inclined.

  8. Hosting.

The only issue we have with hosting is people saying "which host should I use?" - it's not really appropriate for us to entertain recommendations for our competitors ;)

But, discussing other products, comparing feature sets and so on is fine :)

  9. If IPS had a real CMS product, would we no longer be able to mention or link to other CMS software like Wordpress, etc?

Do we forbid you to mention vBulletin, phpBB, etc at the moment?

  10. My thought on trouble tickets... Why not just do as most dedicated servers offer or even as most commercial software support does. Instead of paying for something you hopefully will not need (and IPB software should work out of the box, so it isn't like one needs support daily,) Just have a set amount for a trouble ticket. Yup. If you are not paying for 'yearly' support, then have a set rate for each ticket.

And since it seems that past customers will continue to be locked out of the forums that give past assistance by IPB and customers helping customers with their purchased versions, maybe then offer a fee for past customers to access that area, which would solve about 99% of their need to even place a trouble ticket.

Ways need to be found to bring back old customers as well. In this depressive economic period where so many companies and businesses are going under, costs are being scaled back everywhere. It's always simple business logic to have many customers at a low price, then a few at a high price. Loose those few at the high price and it's all over... loose a few low price customers and it doesn't impact the company as much.

For myself, being out of work for almost 7 months now (Southern California is officially at 11.2% unemployment, but in reality closer to 22%,) if the dedicated servers had not gone down to half in price, I would have shut down all of my servers. Donations into one site for example last year was about $350 a month. This year it's been an average of less than $50... Ways to save, and ways to retain customers, must be looked at closely, and means to get even a small profit is better than no profit at all - which is what happens if it is out of reach...

Personally I hate it when companies do that.

Not to mention, what if someone pays for a ticket and it turns out to be a problem with their host? They'll want their money back..
Too much hassle in my opinion.
  11. 2.3.6 and 3.0.0 are both great products that we're very happy with. The decisions made during the development of 3.0.0 were deemed necessary to bring some great new features that many customers have been asking for.
If you choose to remain on 2.3.6 that is your prerogative and we will continue to offer support for 2.3.6 to customers with active licenses :)
