Just finished the day-long event at Google. Very informative.

I have tons of questions now about how to implement stuff through IPS.

For example, I'm using the Google Structured Data Testing Tool and see they like the Schema.org syntax whereas it looks like IPS uses Open Graph tags. When I test a URL on my site I see an error "Article is not a known valid target type for the itemReviewed property." I want to try to use the structured data like Google recommends here - https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/review-snippet

and validates here

https://search.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool?utm_campaign=devsite&utm_medium=jsonld&utm_source=review-snippet

If I manually edit the metadata for a front page article that reviews a product, it looks like I can only use OG tags.

Question: Is there a way to use the schema.org structure within IPS?

It’s already included in a lot of places. If you see errors, I would suggest to open a support ticket.

If you want to add additional one, be very careful about it. You site could drop in ranking if you make errors. The markup is easy to misuse and Google penalizes sites where it detects problems.

Also, take Google’s recommendation with caution. Their goal is to answer as many user questions on their site as possible without having users to actually visit the site. Being able to retrieve data from the site and show it in search results is a way to do that.

Thanks for the reply. yes, I agree on all accounts.

The biggest reason why I want to edit the schema.org stuff is that IPS is using the Article tag that isn't valid for this and I want to add more tags related to product reviews. I figure I could add these then run the validator to make sure they are correct.

We output structured data in the form of JSON+LD. You can see this by validating any of our "blog" articles (which are actually generated through Pages).

https://search.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool/u/0/?utm_campaign=devsite&utm_medium=jsonld&utm_source=review-snippet#url=https%3A%2F%2Finvisioncommunity.com%2Fnews%2Fcommunity-management%2Fwhat-is-the-engagement-trap-and-what-to-do-about-it-r1168%2F

If you wish to remove the "article" markup and insert your own, you will likely need a plugin written. If you have some universal ideas related to structured data markup you think would be valuable to the community at large to support out of the box, please feel free to share them.

We're in the same boat, we're really struggling with the Invision Power structured data that is currently set up, after the Google updates last year. This is a priority for us and we are in talks with Marc about our issue as well.

The biggest problems is:

There is no way to define which type of page content you are using. The pages application is diverse and intended for so many uses, yet the structured data only pulls through everything as an 'article' and the review schema isn't compatible with it. The best way to resolve this in my opinion would be to allow the adjustment of pages database templates to reflect the content they contain. In our case we have product reviews, local business directories (and user reviews on them), articles, news etc. But everything gets pulled through as type 'article'. If we were able to select a database type based on the schema type it would be extremely useful. We could set our gear templates to 'product' type and our skydiving centers to 'localbusiness'.

Having all pages set to "article" essentially means that no one can make use of the highly valuable ratings structured data, as only the following page types support review data now:

Maybe you can use it like this:
