Sort direction for categories in Pages

I thought  I was pretty good at Pages but it seems not, since a fairly basic task is confusing me.

My articles database is set to show as articles rather than as categories. It's sorted by publishing date with the newest items coming first:

It's displaying exactly as I would hope. (I'm sorry that it's not in English but the dates are easy to recognise.)

But I've just noticed when viewing a category that it's the older articles coming first:

I double-checked using the default listing template set and got the same result:

What haven't I understood? I can't see any other options for choosing the sort order.

Listing template sorting is under “Options” in the database settings. Your screenshot shows the front page ordering
