Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
DaisyB Posted December 4, 2018 Posted December 4, 2018 Hey there! My forum recently updated to the new version of invision - we had been using a significantly older version prior to this. We keep track of post count in order to promote people to different usergroups, and I know that on the new software, there are a variety of different things that get added in to the content count. We think we've turned off the ones we don't need (except posting on the forums), but yesterday, a number of members are saying their content count increased without them posting. Does anyone have a list of all the things that factor into content count? I've been trying to find one and maybe am just missing it? The only app we use is the forums. Thanks!
AndyF Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 Do you use any third party apps that allow members to comment on anything ? I know you said you only use Forums (so I am excluding say Gallery / Blog etc) , as 'comments' on for example a Blog entry or an entry itself may well count to the content count. Just for reference did you upgrade to IPS4 from a 3x version or a 2x version (or lower) ? If it was from a previous 4x Suite version ignore this.
Day_ Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 Might be a daft question, but are members confusing reputation count for content count?
Ramsesx Posted December 5, 2018 Posted December 5, 2018 Or maybe it's recalculating all counters after the upgrade?
DaisyB Posted December 6, 2018 Author Posted December 6, 2018 Hm, we have reputation turned off, and we did have to reset people's post counts when we upgraded, but it doesn't seem that people's post counts are reverting back to those numbers in this scenario. We had needed to reduce post counts when we upgraded, but these new post count additions happening now are sporadic, adding one (or more) to the count when members are reporting that they're not posting? We're also not using third party apps that allow members to comment (we really are sticking mostly to the forums). We don't have reputations enabled on board (I think?) So I'm unsure if it's that. PMs and following threads don't count towards content count, right?
Jennifer M Posted December 6, 2018 Posted December 6, 2018 I could recommend that you could create an Activity stream and set the "Ownership" to "Content by specific member" and enter the user that claims they didn't post anything and create the stream. There you can actually audit exactly what was posted and what potentially added to the count that shouldn't have. @DaisyB
DaisyB Posted December 6, 2018 Author Posted December 6, 2018 That's a good idea! Is creating an activity stream different from looking at a member's posted content on their profile? I'm still learning the new features, lol, and there's a lot! We had been using version 2 before this.
Jennifer M Posted December 7, 2018 Posted December 7, 2018 It can be. You can go through their activity there as well but I just figured it may be easier to create the stream. You can also look at their "All Activity" on their profile and see what is there. I just figured the Activity stream just may have been laid out in a way that's easier to surf through to determine the root cause.
DaisyB Posted December 9, 2018 Author Posted December 9, 2018 Found the issue! We have certain forums that don't count towards post count. When staff moved those posts to staff only archive forums, which DO count posts, member post counts went up. I've set it now so staff only forums don't count posts. Does anyone know if the reverse is also true (moving a post from a forum that counts to a forum that doesn't count towards post count -will that reduce post count?)? If so, any ideas how to work around? It's not a huge deal now that we know the cause, but I'd love to know if anyone else had to work around too!
AndyF Posted December 9, 2018 Posted December 9, 2018 Generally speaking content counters will not decrease (user/member counters) unless you manually alter them.
DaisyB Posted December 9, 2018 Author Posted December 9, 2018 Awesome. Thanks for all your help everyone!
