Is there a way to check to see if my server is compatible for 4.1.17?

Yes.

Download this:

Its just a single php file. Upload it to your server (in public_html or similar) and visit it in your browser. You should see something similar to this:

Unless the release notes between your installed version and the current stable version states that the dependencies and requirements have changed you're good to do.
