Ram required in VPS for IPB

While deciding for VPS - CPU 1.13 GHZ RAM 768 MB Disk Space 30 GB

On conversation with webhost - his following reply made me to rethink

On a shared server, you were allowed a percentage of use as long as you didn't use too much CPU and no more than 25 connections at a time. On a VPS, you have a fixed environment. You are allowed to have as many connections as you want...however, you only have 768M of Ram...A typical Wordpress site may use 256M of ram per user connected.

For Spicyflavours.net VPS 768 MB Ram is sufficient or just sufficient ???

We can have 50 to 100 0r even 120 users online as a guests

It's hard to say exactly if the VPS could handle that load. The PHP memory setting is the maximum memory it can use and not the memory it uses all the time. Generally this would only come near to being filled on exhaustive tasks where a lot of data gets loaded into RAM, most connections will likely use ~20MB RAM, but this can also differ based on your web server choice and other things.

Ram looks low.

My VPS isn't busy, and you can see I use almost your allotment of ram. I rarely get more that 10 IPs on at once on all 3 sites.

yours is burst memory and i think mine is entire RAM
I am still confused for selecting VPS

No, Sandi is showing you she is using 686MB of her 2048MB available. Her burstable memory is 4096MB.

You might struggle with what you have but personally i'd try it and see how things go, then if its lagging you could possibly ask your host for an upgrade ? Just my tuppence worth :)

Seems quite overpriced.

Agreed, that is about an extra $100 for management and less storage than I have for $52 a month ( unmanaged ).

Edit: Not to mention it has the crappy Plesk, while mine for 1/3 the price has cPanel/WHM

It's usually hard to exactly predetermine what memory you're going to use because php is a process that appears and disappears, not something that stick around. So, even if you had 128MB of ram, if you can serve each pages fast enough, your need for actively held ram becomes very small. So, things like how well your disk and cpu performs reduces/increases the ram requirement. Flushing php handlers frequently also reduces ram requirements significantly.

While ram is king when pricing vps, the question of how efficiently you can use that ram is unanswerable until you actually buy it.

However, you can assume some amount of ram being taken by control panels as they often hold a static amount. OS with cPanel tends to hog around 360MB all the time (unless you manually gut it -- it's rather complicated). I don't have accurate numbers for Plesk, but it's in the similar ball park. So, if you have 768MB, take out 360 and you basically have 400MB to do all your php processing (which includes surfing the control panel itself). This is why cpanel/plesk can't be offered on boxes smaller than 512, it's just unrealistic.

Given the specs posted by the OP, I know which host you're getting it from... And I'd like you to urge to look elsewhere. Their hardware is a bit old and your VPS will most likely be off of SATA2 with X3440s.
You especially should try looking for SSD based or SSD cached VPS. These tend to come with small disk allotment, but they will perform very well for applications like forums. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding them at the same price as above. Just search for SSD in WHT VPS forums. Per rules of this forum, I can't really say more than that.

MT caters the "premium" market instead of the average or budget market. Which is why it's priced as such.
It's like buying acetaminophen (aka Tylenol). If you buy the store brand, it's like $10 but if you buy the brand name, it's like $16. If you buy it at the counter with a prescription notice, it's like $30. Even though that specific drug is likely from the same factory and even if not, still guaranteed to be of same ingredient. And if you buy it under generic drug license, it costs like 30 cents. (Though hosting margins aren't as good as pharma...)

I just had a peek on my dedicated machine ~960megs used no swap and that was while doing a backup

420.0 MiB + 325.0 KiB = 420.3 MiB mysqld
748.7 MiB + 90.0 MiB = 838.7 MiB apache2

That's the memory usage for the forums in my signature. Do note, I host other 2 IPB forums as well on same machine. If this helps in guessing how much memory you will need.

The thing to watch out for is that it is a real allocation, some are sneaky and still oversell!

When it comes to good hosting, 9 times our of 10 you get what you pay for, if you want your community to be online and well running, don't' be cheap, if you want to be cheap, don't complain when there are issues.

With that said, for those of you looking at the 70.00 plus price range for a VPS, if you are only running our software, you may be much better off looking at our advanced hosting plans, starting with the ultra 100 at $70.00 per month, these run on a semi dedicated setup and perform very well with very low users per server ratios.

If you have any specific questions on hosting, shoot me a pm
