Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
erickstrada Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 I planned to move my IPB in VPS What is the minimum requirement? What is the major thing that I need to check? RAM? CPU Core? HDD?
Collin S. Posted May 11, 2012 Posted May 11, 2012 I planned to move my IPB in VPS What is the minimum requirement? What is the major thing that I need to check? RAM? CPU Core? HDD? That depends. How many users are active on your community? 10 online users has different needs from 200 online users. Do you have lots of resource-intense mods/apps? Will you be running other sites or just a forum? Lots of attachments? A gallery? There are literally dozens, if not hundreds, of variables that play a role in this. Component requirements such as PHP can be found here-http://www.invisionpower.com/suite/requirements.php
changeindia Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Hi I think RAM and CPU are the top priorities. Go with 1GB RAM or higher, i would recommend.
erickstrada Posted May 12, 2012 Author Posted May 12, 2012 Around 50 - 60 active user in one time And about 200 - 300 at peak. It's run as just a forum. Is it xen for openvz? aren't xen is dedicated?
Sefket Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Around 50 - 60 active user in one time And about 200 - 300 at peak. It's run as just a forum. Is it xen for openvz? aren't xen is dedicated? Yes, it's XEN, but not Open VZ. Also - it matters on how many resources you use as well. cPanel and IPB alone requires around 700MB of RAM I think.
Rhett Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Xen and openvz are both VPS software... neither is a dedicated server and both are far from it..... any vps is still sharing it's resources etc... Xen has more control over these sharing options however, but openvz also has it's positive aspects. However both are still sharing.. so keep that in mind if you run into issues.
.Nuno. Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Hi, i run a small board (100k posts; 10k members; ~200 online average) on a 512 Xen VPS without problems, but I don't use any control panel, just nginx + php5-fpm + MySQL in Debian Squeeze. You can start small and just upgrade when you need.
Royzee Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Agreed, unless you have @200 members just sitting there looking at the screen you need more than 512mb ram.
.Nuno. Posted May 12, 2012 Posted May 12, 2012 Why do you say that? I get ~500k requests/month last 30 days. This is 500k / 30 days = 17k / 12h = 1400 req hour / 60 = 23 req min / 60 = 0,4 req sec. This represents the requests to dynamic content. If you want to add 30 objects per page you will have 0,4 x 30 = 12 req sec but static content is cheap and nginx can serve 2k req sec in my last benchmarks. Note, I used 12h / day because I don't have much traffic at night. I use linode, if you stop by they irc channel you will find people with higher stats than me. I never used another provider for serious projects, but tested a few and I can ensure that your get a very stable and fast vps with them and I know I have ~40 neighborhoods. Do you how much do you have ;) ? Rhett Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 A well setup machine can run on 512 just fine... keep in mind you will need to either us no CP or one that uses minimal system resources. Years ago I ran a bunch of VPS's using what's now called "Kloxo" it's not developed much anymore, but it used to be a very nice control panel for both dedicated servers and VPS's. It was very light and used about half the resources of a typical CP. As with most things, it's more about a proper setup and configuration! :)

Well there are people working on it, however it died out when the original owner passed away, since then it's been changed a bit and not what it used to be.
p4guru Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 512mb ram? that seems crazy for 200 members online! Agreed, unless you have @200 members just sitting there looking at the screen you need more than 512mb ram. believable and it can run fine with 512MB VPS... for certain usage profiles remember reported users online is usually over a cookie/session timeout interval and not REAL concurrent user activity at web, php and mysql levels. only REAL concurrent user activity will determine whether or not 512MB memory is enough for a php/mysql based script.
.Nuno. Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Like I said above, 12 req/s it's easy to archive in a 512 RAM VPS. That's the averge I get and testing with Gomez my front page takes 1,3 sec to load (adsense + analitics + facebook ) with a total of 60 requests. That's not bad :) If I where you I avoid using a control panel, just read some howtos to get the essential running.
Royzee Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 If you ask me,1,3 sec to load a page is not good at all.
.Nuno. Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 If you ask me,1,3 sec to load a page is not good at all. Using the same tool, your takes 1,7 sec and has only 750 posts, tested from Dalas AT&T  Mine was tested from UK BT to Linode UK The tool I used is: http://www.gomeznetw...stant_test.html
Royzee Posted May 13, 2012 Posted May 13, 2012 Mine was tested from UK BT to Linode UK The tool I used is: http://www.gomeznetw...stant_test.html Never takes my VPS a second. Think you need a new ISP  Besides the forum in my signature is NOT on my VPS, that is my DEV site on hostgator shared.
Robulosity2 Posted May 18, 2012 Posted May 18, 2012 Yes, it's XEN, but not Open VZ. Also - it matters on how many resources you use as well. cPanel and IPB alone requires around 700MB of RAM I think. Uses far less for cPanel if its the VPS Optimized one http://cpanel.net/products/cpanelwhm/vps-optimized.html (obviously thats optimized further) But I still run 1gb+ simply because if you end up doing smtp based mailing, exim will eat your face
erickstrada Posted May 19, 2012 Author Posted May 19, 2012 thanks for a lot of constructive response. I'm now using vps with 1core, 512MB (burst to 768), 1TB bandwidth. The server is based in US. I found that the ram usage is a t 4++ constantly. What is weird is, the connection was really slow when it's not from US. Is it normal?
Brian Garcia Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 Well there are people working on it, however it died out when the original owner passed away, since then it's been changed a bit and not what it used to be. And that awesome security issue it had just when the owner had died too.
Dmacleo Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 some what on topic, has anyone here run cpanel and directaccess servers and seem differences in resource usage?
Dmacleo Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 some what on topic, has anyone here run cpanel and directaccess servers and seem differences in resource usage? that should say directadmin not directaccess
Rhett Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 I run DirectAdmin on my servers and have for a few years, it's my preference and much lighter then cpanel imo. If you need help with it let me know. :)
Dmacleo Posted May 19, 2012 Posted May 19, 2012 almost twice as expensive as cpanel so probably not going to, but was curious.
