To be honest, I think vB may look at extending that deal because of all the negative feedback they've received regarding v4. But only time will tell, which "may" be too late. It's a shame they're going about it that way and giving existing (and new) customers approx. two weeks to take advantage of this heavily discounted price.

But yet, they have no demos, no betas and no information beyond their little marketing page.

...Oh wait, I'm wrong... They've got six measly screenshots.

Yes I know. I went onto the vB homepage yesterday and thought I was in the wrong place so had to go back into Google and re-type vbulletin and then it clicked  I saw the screenshots and thought WOW, that is very much different and... quite similar to IPB. I did think many existing vB customers wouldn't be too happy.

And I've just been on there to see what how one particular thread was escalating and... it's gone

I'd love to, but I want to wait to see where this sale idea is going from the IPS team ;)

Yes, That is allowed. They actually encourage it and use that ability as a selling point.

Hell, I've got it running in a completely separate subdomain!

With canned replies, I mean standard reply texts, that you can insert into posts, PM, etc.

Regarding wiki; I currently use a native wiki system: i.e. wiki articles in posts. Its an important part of my site.

You can sort of do canned replied with multi-moderation.

If your Community Suite goes on sale, I'll probably jump off the vb ship. ;)

Thanks for all the replies, you guys truly are quite helpful here :)

So much better than the crap you get (or just being ignored) over at vB.com and vB.org.

Hmmm... go away - we do not want you to discover the wonders of IPB ;)

On second thoughts maybe I should have ignored you. ;)

In seriousness - you can't go far wrong here - there will always be bits missing in any product, my members love display names for example - but VB have always shunned them, but IPB has them so my folks are happy, whereas VB has bits like similar topics IPB has the ability to use Sphinx built in.

For me, it was the way that the staff here dealt with my initial requests and conversion. I had a similar enquiry at VB and in the end it was a much poorer attitude from VB to the same questions & I had test conversions running from both. VB were dismissive of errors I was getting. IPB solved the errors.

Even if they extend that deal the trust is gone so i made my decision and will switch end of October to IPB

For those asking about IP.Content on another domain, keep in mind that www.invisionpower.com is powered by IP.Content

It's not attached to the forums here though is it? I didn't realise you could plug multiple installations of IP.Content into one IP.Board framework...

You can't. :D I'll agree though that Charles' post was a little ambiguous.

What he meant was that you can run IP.Content in "www.domain.com" even if your forum is at "www.domain.com/forums/".

I know I'm pushing it a little here, but is there any way I could try a "full" demo of IPB with FTP access and everything?

I really want to try coding and file edits and things without having to purchase it... I know - as I said - I'm pushing it, but I thought I should at least ask.

Also, did you guys just edit the demo times to 24-hours? I swear they were 8 a couple days ago. ;)

Unfortunately we don't have a downloadable demo to offer. Yes, we did extend the demo to 24 hours recently.

We have some developer's documents here, though: http://community.invisionpower.com/resources/official.html?category=37

Completely understandable :)

However, those documents are rather helpful. A million times better than the crap that is the vB Manual. All the information on vB I have to get from external sources. But here you guys are, telling us everything ;)

Hi. New to IPB, just left vB.

Data transfer was smooth and new site working great.

Two things I can not find how to adjust:
Automatic quote on reply. I do not want members to automatically quote the previous post on reply.
"View New Content" only goes back a few hours. We need that to go back 24 hours or 72 hours.

Sorry for asking for support, but these two things will make the transition painless for our community.

You can enable or disable automatic quotes. If I understand you right on the first question. It's the flick of a switch in the Admin CP.

I could be wrong, but I believe the 'View New Content' can be adjusted as well. That's something I have never used personally, but I almost do recall seeing that ability or something like that.

Each post has a Reply button on it, when members click that they will quote that post. If they don't want to quote the post, they need to either use the Fast Reply section at the bottom of the page, or click the Add Reply button at the top or bottom of the page.

The View New Content page shows content that is 'new', or 'unread', not necessarily within a certain time limit. It sounds like the conversion from vBulletin made everything 'read', given enough time not actively reading content will make that search return more content. Note that there is also a Today's Active Topics link near the bottom of the board index page that relies on just a time limit, not the read/unread status.

Also, I know there are many Vbulletin members either considering moving to IPB 3 or are in the process of doing so, but want to make the move as painless as possible. Especially since they may be adjusted to their current forum software. A few suggestions that always helped me. (You'll always get some people that grumble no matter what. They too will go quiet after awhile.)

1. Promote the things IPB 3 has that VB 3 and even VB 4 do not have or do not yet have. Such as a more community friendly member profile. Or improved PM and User CP options. Basically, you know your members. Push the things that IPB has by default that you know your forum members will like, but may be afraid of losing with the switch. Then promote the positives of that. Simple, yet effective.

2. Also let them know they will NOT lose their posts, pm's, threads, attachments, etc.. And if they love the skins they have, show them some IPB 3 ones you know they'll probably love even more.

3. While some are always against change, most from what I have seen usually adjust and end up liking some of the new features better. Such as IPB 3's improved attachment system.

4. If they ask if a certain mod or feature will be brought over that you either know or think is not yet available for IPB 3, let them know that if it isn't, you'll put in for a request for someone to make that mod. Many times this will pacify them.

5. If they ask what the pro's vs. con's are, let them know you will leave it up to them. But that you have come to find that IPB 3 is a far cry from previous IPB versions they may be aware of and is in no way close to Invisionfree forums. That it is above them in every way and has features that at this point it appears not even Vbulletin 4 will yet have.

6. And for the mods and admins, let them know that IPB 3 has many of the same banning (and even improved) features that VB has.

Long story short, push the pro's. (IMO there are quite a few.) Focus on hyping them up. That will make the transition easier. What I always did, was found an IPB 3 forum that had a skin I knew they would like. I would then have them visit that forum to get an idea of what IPB 3 is like. (That included pointing them here.) By the time it was said and done, most were hyped for it and things went great. In fact they never wanted me to go back to Vbulletin again after that. They liked IPB 3 way too much. To them VB seemed like a step down. (Which IMO it is anyways. But I digress.) Once they start playing with their profiles (which is what I pushed them to do), they loved it and started spamming each others comments. It was great. It wasn't some bland profile anymore. It was a robust social network for them. And the longer they stay on your forum, the better.

IPB 3 is just as robust if not more so than VBulletin 3 and even what's known of Vbulletin 4. Does Vbulletin 3 or 4 have a built in virus scanner? Does it have community friendly profiles? Simple answer, no. And that's an EXTREMELY short list.

In the end it's up to you as to what you want to do for you and your members. But I'm confident most of them will enjoy what IPb 3 has to offer. :)

One more mod I almost forgot to add was iTrader.
It allows ebay like feedback ratings for sales conducted on the forum.

Edit - Also struggling trying to find the arcade for IPB3 as well.

I'm pretty sure that there isn't an arcade mod yet. I can guess that someone is already working on it. Not sure.
I know there is a paid radio mod.
A post thank you mod is somehow close to the built in reputation system. You can also install this mod [AH30] Reputation 1.0.2 to improve the current reputation system.
