On the older version of IPB when you went View New Post, There was a line that always appeared

Mark all forums as read and return to index

Are we going to have that back or we will have to go to bottom all the time to go mark board read???

Paul

The mark forum read on the main index page hear is for the whole forum, but each individual forum has its own link to mark that forum only as read. It's on the top left under the forum title.
The actual feature on this board has a bug in it an they are working on it.

The option - "Mark all forums as read and return to index" needs to be back in "view new content"
forum members dont want to have to go to the forum index each time to use that option.

I believe that when it's working properly, all topics that you have read will be correctly marked as read and will no longer display on the "View New Content" page, so there's no need for the link. Topic marking is just a little screwy in beta 3.

I'll add my vote to put back the option to "Mark all forums as read and return to index".

It was a very handy feature for me, since I tend to read each forum separately and not use the "New Threads" method.

Topic marking *is* getting better, though. At least they seem to be STAYING marked now. ;)

no you have misunderstood
a lot of people go to the view new content, if there is nothing you want to read in the list of new unread content.
click the "Mark all forums as read and return to index" marks them as read and clears the list.
why would i want to come out of view new content, scroll to the index bottom just to clear unread posts.

Um, why would they have to do that... the link is on the bottom of every page, including the view new content page. In other words, you could scroll to the bottom of the view new content page and click it, without first going to the board index.

That said, I do want to see this link added back at some point.

You're talking about marking an individual forum as read. This link is already available at the top of the forum listing. The OP is talking about view new content specifically.

You don't have to. The link is at the bottom of the page of the view new content page, not just the forum index. As for adding it to the top of the view new content page, again it's something I'd like to see added back as well, but hardly the biggest priority with 3.0's initial release at the same time.

Yes, I know that link is there.

But the "Mark forum read and return to Index", found in the previous version of IPB in each forum, has been removed.

I just want that feature back. :D

Seems a bit redundant to me to have two links that do the same thing but send you somewhere different afterwards. Where would we stop? How about when posting "send to topic, send to forum, or send to board index" after posting? When sending a PM "view conversation, view inbox, go to board index"? It just isn't very clean in my opinion.

However, I don't actually work on the skin directly, so it's up to Rikki ultimately.

Well, each to his own I guess. ;)

Personally, I think the existing "Mark Read" function WITHOUT going to some other page is redundant.

Once a forum is marked as having been read, why would you want to STAY there?

I'm not opposed necessarily to having it redirect you back to the index, as I tend to agree with that sentiment. I just don't think we need two links to handle that situation is all. If Rikki wants it to redirect back to the index, that's fine with me.

I am all for changes, but I still think that the link to mark forums as read after you go view new content would be better off at the top.
The "Mark board as read" is a bit more confusing location in my opinion.

That said. I guess we can get use to anything.

Cheers

As I said, I'd prefer it at the top too. ;) I have some ideas for the search system in the next version, so perhaps I'll add it then if Rikki doesn't add it now.

I went to use the "Mark Board As Read" link the other day and it took me what felt like 5 minutes searching for it. I had no idea it was below the dark blue bar which can easily be conceived as the "end" and everything should be within that unless its links to TOS or copyright info or contact info or whatever. An actual commonly used board function should at the very least be before the bar somewhere. Underneath that bar was the last place I personally thought to look.

I think if IPS don't code it back in, many of us will be editing the skins and putting it back in so that our members don't get confused. I don't read every post at my site and I guess many of my members don't read them all either so having this link in a highly visible place i.e. the top is very handy.

Where would we stop?

um how about keeping things as they are in 2.3.6. We're not asking for new things just keep things as they are now as the current method works well.

I'm afraid that's simply not realistic. ;) That would mean there'd realistically never be a reason to release an update - just keep things as they are in the current version.

To make room for new functionality, clean up the interface, and streamline where everything is (2.3 was beginning to get cluttered) some things had to be moved around. The skin system is there for a reason.
