Carl M Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I hope IPS put something in place so that people with custom skins can still use the skin they currently have on 2.3, especially when you have a wacky skin like my forum!

Matt said they don't care about making it easier for 2.3 skins and mods to work on it unfortunately.
Carl M Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Thats a nice attitude to take! Just piss of your existing customers, nice!
Lindsey_ Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Thats a nice attitude to take! Just piss of your existing customers, nice! Well then don't upgrade to 3.0 when it comes out. Stay with 2.3.5 ;)
TestingSomething Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I'm considering not upgrading also because of it. Hopefully I will just be able to do what I need to do and go ahead and upgrade though. Most of my skins are ones I don't care too much about keeping. But I like two in particular. I also want my own components to work and would "prefer" some others still working. But I can assure that arcade and casino will be a mess when 3.0 comes out and just flat won't work, so it really comes down to whether a person wants to have a forum with no modifications working or if they would rather have worse forum software, but with all the cool modifications. I personally think they could have done "something" to help make the transition easier or at least not make a point to flat say they don't care if they work or not, but whatever. Just a choice for everyone I guess. Although if you notice... 2.0 and 2.1 aren't even supported anymore, so they will just try to force people to either upgrade or get no support at some point. Probably way after release though. (although I have learned not to assume anything positive by default with companies :) )
Carl M Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 If they take the stance of not caring, im going to take the stance of not paying! Its like we like you cos your loyal but you have a custom skin so go f*** yourself. Anyways i will see what happens but if no support is provided im afraid i will either stick on 2.3.5 or go elsewhere,
Management Charles Posted May 7, 2008 Management Posted May 7, 2008 Matt said they don't care about making it easier for 2.3 skins and mods to work on it unfortunately. What Matt said was:IPB 3.0 has a brand new PHP 5.0 only framework which means most function names and classes have been either rewritten entirely or completely refactored. $ipsclass has been completely removed and a new Registry -> Controller -> Command -> View framework has been put into place. I'll be posted an outline to the changes in a forthcoming blog entry. We are making no effort to make any current templates, skins or modifications work with IPB 3.0. We cannot move forwards with development if we're tied to IPB 2.x and in some cases IPB 1.x conventions. Please do not put things the way you did as you just stir people up with misinformation. It's not that we don't "care" about the current skins or mods. We are merely saying that we are not going to code with the core focus of making old stuff work in the new version. It was the same as going from 1.x to 2.x most everything did not work.
TrixieTang Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Thats a nice attitude to take! Just piss of your existing customers, nice! Yeah, I'd say you're just blowing things out of proportion, the majority of skins and mods will be remade for 3.0 eventually, I mean I'm sure it's not the easiest thing to get older mods to work on a completely new version of a software, and they have better things to be putting their time into with developing 3.0.Even still your saying take 3.0 or not! All software is like that, when there's a whole new version released the old stuff most often doesn't work, apparently you're new to this.

Obviously that was just how I took it, but when he makes a point of saying no effort is being made it just looks the same to me as if it did say they don't care if they work. I'm just very frustrated that it does indeed seem like the company is saying they aren't concerned with whether or not things make it harder on customers. That's the way I took it anyway.
Management Charles Posted May 7, 2008 Management Posted May 7, 2008 Even still your saying take 3.0 or not! I did? I don't think I did. Maybe I did and was not aware. I could be wrong. Like I said, it was the same from 1.x to 2.x ... when you change a substantial amount of the code old skins and mods will have to be updated to work on the new version. I should get Microsoft's Vista team to back me up here

That may be but this question came up earlier in this very topic and was already clarified in a reply to you in fact :) Post #58 page 3 of the topic if you would like to reference. You also acknowledged and thanked me for the clarification in post #65 on page 4 of this topic.

Rikki Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 If we're going to move the product forward to any considerable extent, then there's going to be things that aren't backwards compatible. We can't keep support for 2.x skins while progressing our software. 3.0 is a major version release, and so is the appropriate time to do it.
TestingSomething Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 Yeah, I'd say you're just blowing things out of proportion, the majority of skins and mods will be remade for 3.0 eventually, I mean I'm sure it's not the easiest thing to get older mods to work on a completely new version of a software, and they have better things to be putting their time into with developing 3.0. I agree that most likely most skins and mods will be redone. i would guess that sites which rely heavily on either will just wait a while before upgrading. One of the most popular invision forums is idolforums.com and they don't immediately upgrade either. However it took a VERY VERY long time for some mods to be redone for 2.1 from 2.0, so i wouldn't hold my breath. Some are very large and take a long time to fix. The two exclusive ones that I have.... they are probably small compared to a lot of components, but they are a combined 14,000+ lines of coding so I am already dreading even my two which are probably nothing compared to something such as arcade. That's why I am excited about 3.0 and dreading it at the same time. I am not even going to try to make any new modifications now because why make something that will have to be changed in half a year? So i guess I have half a year to just fix up my own 2 and do some small changes here and there. I'm really bored and would like to make a new component though. Ahhhhh.
zigs Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I have a custom skin, doubt that will be remade eventually I have 7 custom skins :D I will be upgrading to 3.00 as soon as I can, I will just get another skin made (but prob not 7  )
Carl M Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I would say that too but i paid $250 for my current skin so no i definately wont
Management Charles Posted May 7, 2008 Management Posted May 7, 2008 Along the whole line of mods and such... we do have some things in the works that will make modification in general a LOT easier. Since that seems to be a concern I'll see about moving the blog post about that up the schedule so everyone can get an idea of the plans a bit sooner :)
Lindsey_ Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 I have 7 custom skins :D I will be upgrading to 3.00 as soon as I can, I will just get another skin made (but prob not 7  ) They look good Zigs, seeing 3.0 has a new template/theme coming out I'm holding back on my custom skin!
zigs Posted May 7, 2008 Posted May 7, 2008 They look good Zigs, seeing 3.0 has a new template/theme coming out I'm holding back on my custom skin! I know, I love my skins  but I would rather have an up to date board, hopefully my skins will be modified to match 3.0

When it was first posted I ignored it totally becuase I am trying not to make a big deal about anything. I just really think that it's important to a lot of customers that it be as easy as "realistically" possible to upgrade things. I understand both sides really.
