[Feature Request] Tagging System

I propose you add a Tagging System to IP.Board, so that users creating new threads can tag them with relevant keywords. Tags are quite popular these days as a way to categorize information; technorati uses them to group news, flickr uses them to group photos, etc. You don't see tags very often on message boards, but I think they would be an incredibly useful feature!

You might think threads are already categorized well enough because users can choose a particular forum in which to post them. But tags would give users the ability to connect similar or related topics across all forums and threads. You can find relevant information much more quickly and accurately. I don't think forums or forum categories need to be taken away, but the addition of tags would definitely be a plus.

That one would be the first one of it kind. Great idea. Maybe released it as an official ext.

Thanks, yeah I think it's a great idea. I hope it'll be given consideration.

Splendid idea, I was actually thinking of something similar myself. When a board become big, this will seriously help members to find relevant information.

Sounds interesting, i quite like that idea! :)

I watched that guy's screencast demo-ing the mod. It doesn't look very "pretty," the way he implemented tagging. I'm thrilled that someone has done this though!

But I'd like to see IPS integrate tagging into the core.

A integrated solution would have been the best for IP.Board.

hmm very nice a tagging system sounds great

I agree, this would be really cool :)

Interesting idea. Might help take some load off the searching system as well. Biggest problem would be getting users to actually USE it.. Default the search to search by the keyword tag.. User has to change to a full-forum search.. Adds a step for users, but could have a tremendous impact on larger forums..

Tick the guy charging $15 for his system off pretty good, i'd bet..

++ .. exactly... most people won't bother. I can see people using it on a SEO-related forum lol... but nothing apart from that.

If it's integrated into the post page well enough, I think people will use it. Thanks for considering Jason! I hadn't thought about the potential search benefits, but that's an awesome concept.

I'd like the tag feature to be like the IPB tbug tracker. Moderators can add tags, or highlight topic.

vbulletin already has a mod to do this...

So does IPB. He's asking for it to be built in by default.

I was skeptical at first, but when I used it on a linux forum it's very very useful! Helps find similar topics... Like in my case I was posting about a boot splash for fedora. I put the words "splash", "boot", etc... I clicked on the "splash" tag at the bottom of my thread and found some other topics similar to what I had posted about.... I had used the search function before, but had not found these topics.

I think that is very untrue.

Tagging is becoming a very popular thing to do on the web, in blogs etc. A lot of well know popular websites, as mentioned in the first post, use this and it could very easily become popular.

Ofcourse they may not use it as it stands, because it is not there. So with the option to do so i'm sure it would catch on well.

Just so everyone knows, this is one of the few topics I'd like to say in advance I'm putting in my support for as well. ;)

Josh and I have been brainstorming on this and have some really good ideas for how tagging could be used, especially centralized across all our products through one core. This suggestion is definitely on our radar.

Great news from you guys :)

Indeed! Great news.

Awesome, tagging would be an awesome addition to IPB 3 :)
I hope it will be possible for the staff to limit the tags in certain forums to tags of their choice!

Argh, Lava Guy, that was mentioned and discussed on the first page.
