Thanks everyone @Miss_B fix worked for me, but everyone's comments were helpful.
@Marc Stridgen should i start another conversation about why I did not receive the password reset email? I 'm not sure if this is a system wide problem. My mailing address in the database was correct.

You will want to check your email settings in ACP -> System -> Email Settings. First ensure there are not errors in the Email Error Logs.

Guest posts often help keep the forum going, but I guess I have to kill that feature...

That wouldn't be post before registering (topics aren't visible before registration is completed and would have a valid member after registration) , it looks like the OP may have permissions set so that guests can post topics.
Go to AdminCP > Members > Member Groups > Click the padlock icon next to 'guests'. Make sure that they don't have any permissions for posting replies or topics.

Most likely turned off the 'Post before registration' feature.
