What is the point of this increased width field? Somehow it looks pretty ugly...?

I did mention it being far too wide, just got laughed at.

It's funny when a change is made for the benefit of some users, and everyone else is harmed.
And now each of us must add, for example,

#elSearch{width:300px}

because the selected width is too large 350 px

It’s funny… some think it’s too wide and some not enough.  The lesson?  You can’t please everyone.

To be frank, I totally "missed" that the bar is so "wide".
