I would like to hide the registration buttons from the public but still be able to send a registration link to potential members. can this be done

So hide the buttons from guests, but still be around to send it to people to register....which means they are guests, so won't be able to see the buttons? Not getting the logic here...maybe expand on what 'buttons' it is that you are talking about?

I'd take a random guess the OP wants to just skin the button links out (I recall doing this on a couple of 3x boards ages ago by request, I think I may of posted an article on it somewhere but it will be long gone now) , and then merely keeping a copy of the registration link and sending it manually to potential registrants.

Manual theme edit or possibly a quick plugin could hide said links I guess. ?

Thanks guys, will do. I was looking to hide registration from public and only send to vetted new members. i.e. private club.
