Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
SecondSight Posted February 6, 2017 Posted February 6, 2017 Hello ! How do you prevent spammers from creating an account on your board ? Since yesterday, I'm having many accounts being created with domain names such as d.gsasearchengineranker.xyz or c.travel-e-store.com. It was possible in the past to prevent an account creation by adding the domain name to a forbidden words list. Is it still possible today ? Thank you !

Cyboman Posted February 19, 2017 Posted February 19, 2017 Use the newest reCAPTCHA by changing the version in the registration settings in ACP. Therefore you must register for the reCAPTCHA to receive your keys. I had the same problem. Since the upgrade everything is fine again.
LiquidFractal Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 You may not even have to bother tracking down domain names for a ban list. In addition to reCAPTCHA, In AdminCP->Members->Spam Prevention you can set a Question and Answer Challenge. Mine, for example, is "what are the first three digits of pi? (answer in x.xx format)". It also helps to have a robust registration page (with security questions etc) that may deter automated bots from filling in all the fields and checking all the necessary boxes. I've done all this. I track logins with Adriano Faria's Login Logs plugin, and while I get many signin attempts not a single spam account has managed to get in.
SecondSight Posted March 19, 2017 Author Posted March 19, 2017 I've had a new spammer registration today... I already have the question/answer challenge enabled along with reCAPTCHA 1. Now I'm giving a try to the reCAPTCHA 2. Thank you !
