Can it just hide them all together? I don't want non-paid members to be able to see content hosted on our server.

Yeah, you can hide them forever from anyone and set which member groups can bypass the hidden content.

Or force people to reply to view hidden content. Meaning if you have a paid section and your permissions only allow paid members to reply there, this'd be useful.
