I've just installed v4 but I can't find any way of activating the sidebar.  I've searched the forums and documentation but can't find any references to it.

Please can somebody point me in the right direction??

If your user has rights to manage the sidebar from ACP then can you see the little handle on the left side of the website?

Click on "Manage blocks" arrow on the left hand side and drag any block you wish to the right hand side where sidebar is.

Once you dragged at least one block sidebar will be visible.

I added some blocks, and I made a custom one too, but I can't see how to give the block a title that matches the pre-made blocks - is that easy?

It'll create formatted title bar for you.
