Jamie. Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 What is best for a IPB on a VPS ? Operating System (OpenVZ): specs : » Control Panel: cPanel » Disk Space: 30 GB » RAM (Memory): 1024 MB Guaranteed / 2048 MB Burstable » Bandwidth Configurations: 1000 GB Transfer on 100 Mbps » 2 IP Addresses
Amy T Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Centos 64 bit is what my sever uses although I am on a semi dedicated not vps. When I did have vps until I could not longer afford it I was using centos 64 bit.
AlexJ Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Either Debian or Centos. My friend uses Centos 64bit 5.4 without any issue and I use Debian. It all comes down to personal preferences
Zhana Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 32 bit will be fine. I had issues with 64 bit.
RobertMidd Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 I use CentOS5 64 and have no issues. Make sure your package comes with shell access, it makes life a whole lot easier.
optrexnz Posted December 16, 2010 Posted December 16, 2010 Your OS choice will depend on your control panels choice. So VZ has issues with ubuntu for instance. Centos 5 64 bit will be fine.
Jamie. Posted December 16, 2010 Author Posted December 16, 2010 Thanks +1 to all of you I went for CentOS 5.4 32bit
Gary. Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 Take note that if you have chosen 32 bit you must be sure that you will not be updating the memory in near future as it's not possible. 64 bit allows upgrades to as much as you like on the server where 32 bit will be limitedto 4GB. Now for you it does not matter, Its only if you wish to upgrade you will have problems. 64bit is more advanced, Now yes there are alot more exploits out there but its nothing a small patch will not fix.
Guest Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 Definitely would recommend 64bit personally... We use CentOS at IPS, my personal server uses Ubuntu.
Jamie. Posted December 17, 2010 Author Posted December 17, 2010 I was thinking of going for 64bit then my server admin told me to go for 32bit
optrexnz Posted December 17, 2010 Posted December 17, 2010 I was thinking of going for 64bit then my server admin told me to go for 32bit definately 64bit to be honest. It makes no difference to the admin tbh, I doubt you'd be printing on it
Gary. Posted December 18, 2010 Posted December 18, 2010 On the other hand to my post above, If your not good with linux or such then you may want to stick to 32bit as due to the large amount of exploits recently I guess you may have trouble patching them, Experienced users will have no trouble, I assume you have a basic idea but not to the full extent where you can apply such settings. Do not take offence by the way, I was only intending to help.
