Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Dmitri Posted April 16, 2010 Posted April 16, 2010 Couple thinks I noticed about Facebook connect: 1) Getting this message on FB popup: Invision Power Services Community requires your email address. This should really be optional to a user. I usually alwasy say "Don't allow" to this question. But it appears that if I don't allow the access to my email address, then the whole Facebook connect fails. This is not right, especially during the initial signin to site. basically many people will click on "Dont' allow" and they will just not join the site then. No error messages, just failed signup process. Same thing when I try to connect my existing account with Facebook account - if I refuse to share the email address, then connect process just aborts without a warning. 2) Tried to access this forum from different browser, on which I don't have Facebook cookie because I never log in to my facebook from that browser. So guess what? The Facebook button does not even appear as a signin option then! This is also wrong. It should still appear, should not check if I have Facebook cookie or not. Not sure if this is part of facebook javascript FBML behaviour, in which case this is not even your fault.
Nuclear General Posted April 17, 2010 Posted April 17, 2010 Your not giving IPS your email. That pop up is just taking you to the facebook site to signin and thats it.
Management Matt Posted April 18, 2010 Management Posted April 18, 2010 Re #2 - what is your other Browser?
Bartosz Misiak Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 I've got another one. This account has been created using FBC. This means I don't have a password. I wanted to set one, so I went to My Settings -> Change password. Unfortunately it wants me to type in an old password. The same problem appears when I'm trying to change my e-mail - this operation also requires a password. It would be kind if there was a way to do these things after FBC registration. It shouldn't ask for a password if the account doesn't have one.

Nuclear General Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 You use your Facebook username(email) and password to login using the Facebook connect feature at any IP.Board powered site that has it enabled. When using the FBC, it opens a popup box that goes to FB's login page and then redirects it back to IPS for a login process.
Bartosz Misiak Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 Yep, IPB has no idea what my Facebook password is.
Bartosz Misiak Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 They're not supposed to know...This account has been created using FBC. This means I don't have a password. I wanted to set one, [...] I can't login on the mobile skin without a password and Facebook is not supported there, even on the iPhone.
bfarber Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 The change password page is a good observation. I tend to agree we probably need to adjust that page when coming from another source where you wouldn't have defined a password (twitter/facebook/etc)
Management Matt Posted April 19, 2010 Management Posted April 19, 2010 Ok, here's the solution for 3.1. We will look into using Facebook's mobile API in a future release:
Jason Stix Buckley Posted April 21, 2010 Posted April 21, 2010 According to this article, Facebook is axing the Facebook Connect brand - http://mashable.com/2010/04/21/facebook-kills-facebook-connect/ How does this affect this feature?
Capt'n Morgan Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Curious to see how this will work with forums.... http://developers.facebook.com/docs/opengraph
Carl M Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 Matt tweeted about seeing some of the new facebook API's im sure he's got some ideas - looks like it will probably be the "likes this" option
Myr Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 I can definitely see where the "Like" this would be very handy at driving traffic. I turned FaceBook Connect on just a little while ago and people have been really taking advantage of it. It has also shown a noticeable increase in traffic. I'm currently researching the tools to deploy on my site outside of the forums. It would be great to have them built in to the upcoming release.
Carl M Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Look Matts already worked on the new API's for 3.1 - good work Matt :)
