I think that for skinning, there should be an option that says "Set to default." Then, when you press revert, it will revert back to what it was when you pressed Set to default.

You can do something similar using parent/child skins - which has been made more functional in IPB3 (you can have children skins of children skins)

While this seems interesting I don't think it would be helpful. Being that sometimes with upgrades templates can break and having it revert to a "default" that you set will not likely fix some problems. This is why Revert is there in its current state.

Of course something like this may sound cool, but it adds an enormous amount of complexity to the system. ;)
