Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Majdi 2.1 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 how about a converter as a "Community Project" a volunteer developer or more can work together to create a super converter and since its a community project -watched by ipb team- members will trust it. I personally don't use 3rd party converters and current available converter cant deal with many scripts such as woltlab burning board v3
Morrigan Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 I don't see why. While I can see the use it just doesn't seem logical.
Majdi 2.1 Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 usually 3rd party converters doesnt get the necessary updates in addition to that people tend to trust projected adopted by IPB more than 3rd parties.
Morrigan Posted October 15, 2008 Posted October 15, 2008 Well IPB already has converters that they provide in the client area.
bfarber Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 As we already have a standardized converter system, and we provide custom conversion services, not only do I think this would be unnecessary, but I don't think it's something we would want to attempt. There are plenty of other great ideas for community projects already out there.
Majdi 2.1 Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 the converters u provide doesnt support many system such as burning board v3 which i already stated
Jaggi Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 you can request to have one made for a very small fee.
bfarber Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 Yes, the converters we create are based on necessity. There are probably a billion forum scripts out there, and unfortunately we can't just go around creating converters for systems no one will ever convert to us from. It's a waste of our time. When someone does pay to have a converter created for a semi-common system, quite frequently it gets rolled into our standard conversion service. At that point of course it makes sense to retain a copy of the converter.
Jaggi Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 There are probably a billion forum scripts out there /me starts to count... 1...2...3...4...5...6
Jason L Posted October 16, 2008 Posted October 16, 2008 There are a couple major issues involved with the community converter project. 1.) We would have to support any issues with the community converter project, since we would be providing conversions as a service still. So anyone involved with coding for the project who does write code that creates a bug would have to be hunted down and changed by an IPS developer. 2.) Any new converters would be created at the mercy of the community. Currently, if something doesn't exist you can request a custom conversion and have a quick turnaround.

Curious, does that include conversion of gallery systems? Last time I used your free converter, I noticed it will convert Coppermine Gallery to IP.Gallery. When I converted a site given to me, from vBulletin to IP.Board, I had no way to convert the gallery that they used at the time (PhotoPlog I think), so I manually uploaded the images and assigned them to each user.. saving them in a temporary category.
Jυra Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Curious, does that include conversion of gallery systems? I always found it odd that IPS makes one of the better gallery systems and doesn't have any converters.
bfarber Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 There has been little demand or requests for gallery systems. I believe the converter tool can support it, but we just don't have any except for Coppermine (the only one we've received multiple requests for). If you request a custom conversion service, the specialist can discuss your needs and let you know for sure if the system you are converting from can be done.
Louis M. Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Most of our converters have grown from requests. There are so many different application to convert from that is can be difficult to keep on top of them all. As Brandon said, email conversion@invisionpower.com and we will be able to discuss what the best way to resolve your conversion needs is.
Feneroin Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 Yeah and i will start to use IPB in 1 week with help of L.MARKHAM, we have discussed for this (WBB3) conversion and I'm happy for using IPB soon :)
Louis M. Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I hate to rehash an old topic, but I have been getting a lot of questions on this topic. If you need help with a converter or are inquiring about a converter, please email conversions@invisionpower.com. Customer support is not provided on this forum, either in topics or via PMs. The email will also ensure that if I am not here (like I won't be over Christmas) someone can assist you.
