Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
KiteLife Posted June 27, 2008 Posted June 27, 2008 It appears that when a user's paid subscription expires, IP.Board does not send the administrator(s) an email (such as when we get a new paid subscriber) notifying them... Seems like this would be a built-in feature, so that forum owners can pursue expired subscriptions through follow up communications, encouraging a renewal. A simple way to customize the sign up / renewal / expiration emails that IPB sends out would be useful. == It would also be a benefit, if when we manually add a transaction, if we could CHOOSE whether or not to have the system send that user a confirmation email... It says "New Purchase" in that email, and sometimes we're just changing the status of their account to be current, but I've had people write back to me in anger, asking me why I've charged them again. :( == Thanks for your ear.
W13 Posted June 28, 2008 Posted June 28, 2008 I can tell you one thing: it's pretty annoying to be receiving so many emails about people signing up :-( Also- the whole paid-subscription thing has messed up my ranking system (user-group hierarchy). I wish it was possible to assign the 'PAID MEMBER' status as a secondary user-group rather than the primary one. (i.e. some of my MODERATORS have signed up, and it changed their user-group! lol, I had to manually go change it back, and assign a secondary user-group manually). In this case, when the subscriptions expire, I won't have a clue. People will have their secondary user-group forever unless I get notified! ++ to this suggestion.
bfarber Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 The subscription manager will be moved to a community project after it is updated to work for IPB3. We hope that by doing this, all of these nice features people have requested over the years (but we've not had time to implement) can finally be addressed. There are dozens of cool things that could be done with the subscription manager if the right amount of time was invested (secondary user groups, override group permission masks, etc.), and we hope our community will enhance the subscription manager as it deserves. :)
Venom79 Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 I love the idea of community projects, its too bad that this wasn't implemented earlier or we "might" of still had the TSL and Filemanager
China J Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I'm curious lol... What is the difference between the Subscriptions Community Project & it's current status of IPB integration which is open source and anyone in the community could have upgraded or added improvements a long time ago? So will this be a addon component now like the bugtracker? Also, why the shoutbox? Why not the portal or links system? I have never been in favor of any shoutboxes cause they take away from forum postings. Who doesn't need a portal or links system these days? Just curious is all.
Morrigan Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I'm all for the Shoutbox and am excited but I would love to see the Links system added as one as I've been trying to fix bugs in the one that is currently available.
SecondSight Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I personally don't like the idea of a community project for the Subscription System. It should be developped by IPS : this would, in my opinion, guarranty that the subscription system will not disappear. As for me, I use it to allow my board's members to help me pay for my board's hosting. Without the Subscription System, my board would disappear since I wouldn't be able to pay the hosting without it.
AndyF Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I'm all for the Shoutbox and am excited but I would love to see the Links system added as one as I've been trying to fix bugs in the one that is currently available. I "think" this is a newer version of the same > http://www.invisionmodding.com/index.php?showtopic=28149 I did download it a few days ago, but not tried it out yet...
bfarber Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 Basically, we will get it up to date to work with IP.Board 3.0, and then take on a few members of the community to continue it, similar to the tracker project. In doing so, we hope that it gets more attention, and long-standing feature requests will finally be implemented. It's not that we ignore any requests, we just have to prioritize our resources, and when a small fraction of the community uses a feature (such as this) we have to spend more time on the features everyone uses. Also, why the shoutbox? Why not the portal or links system? I have never been in favor of any shoutboxes cause they take away from forum postings. Who doesn't need a portal or links system these days? Just curious is all. We've explained this. :P YOU may not be in favor of a shoutbox, but at the end of the day it is one of the most popular modifications out there. We got permission from the author to continue it as a community project, thus we've taken steps to do so. We have a portal built in, so I don't forsee a portal community project (perhaps just some more time invested in our current implementation to make it more robust), but a links system has been discussed as well. Some of this comes down to the number of volunteers who can chip in towards a project.I personally don't like the idea of a community project for the Subscription System. It should be developped by IPS : this would, in my opinion, guarranty that the subscription system will not disappear. Perhaps, but as we've noted above, we simply have to focus our resources on the core functionality our users expect us to develop. I can understand the sentiment that if it's included it must be secure/safe from disappearing, however on the flipside, I personally feel that if we turn it into a community project and get a couple of good developers on board, a ton of stuff could be added to it that otherwise wouldn't be (all coming down to time, and what we spend our time on).
Morrigan Posted July 1, 2008 Posted July 1, 2008 I'll have to see how it upgrades on my testforum. :) I still think that something like this should be an IPS Community project.

Sorry I used the Portal and Links system in one sentence, but I was referring to IP.Portal as it really lacks a lot of things and especially in the cosmetics/features department. The links system is the bfarber links system which I really like to see as a community project that's constantly updated or integrated in the next v3 release. Yes I agree the shoutbox is really popular. More so IMO amoungst piraters and kiddies with a smaller percentage (mature adults) being actual licensed holders. But oh well, it's not that I don't like it, there's just no real value for my forums I believe compared to a links system or improved IP.Portal so I can get rid of the stupid mkportal I use :P
