Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
Will Munny Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Question for the developers here. I had a quick search but can't see if it's been addressed already. I know you are putting together a friendly URL system and possibly lifting some ideas from the website in my signature field... but something just occurred to me. Will you be including a sitemap generator in the new IPB? If so, it's crucial that it has seamless integration with the friendly URL system. Any comments?
WebbyB Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I've mentioned it a couple of times and agree it would be a logical feature to have :) +1
Will Munny Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 If it is made a feature, the URLs in the sitemap.xml MUST match whatever is in the FURL.

Just curious why it wouldn't when that's primarily the purpose of a sitemap tool? If I'm guessing right you mean it should work both ways if the FURL's are enabled or not enabled just like CSEO?If it is made a feature, the URLs in the sitemap.xml MUST match whatever is in the FURL.
Axel Wers Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Will you be including a sitemap generator in the new IPB? If so, it's crucial that it has seamless integration with the friendly URL system. Any comments? Yes, this would be very usefull. I made sitemap for my forum manually this included about 1500 links from my forum.
Tarun Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 Another vote to add this. It's a pain to try and find a good free sitemap generator...
Will Munny Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 +1 Just curious why it wouldn't when that's primarily the purpose of a sitemap tool? If I'm guessing right you mean it should work both ways if the FURL's are enabled or not enabled just like CSEO? It's obvious isn't it?... A sitemap generator that creates dynamic links for the search engines when you have user/engine friendly links set up would be a duplicate content catastrophe. I can't say this strongly enough... 301 headers that point to the new FURLs MUST be set up on the old dynamic links.
China J Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 I currently use CSEO and because IPS has never incorporated one in the past I can honestly say I never seen this occur before. bfarber gave reviews of the CSEO and I'm sure if this was an issue it would be one that he would try to avoid repeating, but as I said I've never seen the issue brought up before. I'm behind your idea even though IPS confirmed many months ago that this will be a feature in the 3.0 series and also confirmed it again in the IPS Blog "lightly" just recently in the past few weeks. However the blog didn't go into details or mention a sitemap. I'm just voting +1 to join in the overall support for this to make sure it gets done :) Maybe if they see this topic, then they may consider posting a new blog entry to give us insight about the planned system?
bfarber Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 More information will be released about each new feature in 3.0 over time. As you can see we're staggering them and talking about things little by little. It will probably be a while before we get to the friendly url stuff. ;)
MrEdd Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 A nice addition to this would be the option to have it scan for non forum based pages on the same domain so that your site will also be included in the map.

So you propose we code a website crawler into IPB? Personally I think that would extend IPB quite a ways beyond a forum software...
China J Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 So you propose we code a website crawler into IPB? Personally I think that would extend IPB quite a ways beyond a forum software... I agree with you. That's just over the top and way too many parameters to consider cause pretty much you will have to weed out manually what you don't want in the sitemap usually after it's ran which creates more work. Just keep things limited to IPB then that way it can be controlled by settings that dictate what areas & sections to include via ACP. If people want to webcrawl their site, there is plenty of free/paid software on the market to do that and when using them you can just exclude any software that has sitemap capability already built in :)
MrEdd Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 So you propose we code a website crawler into IPB? Personally I think that would extend IPB quite a ways beyond a forum software... When put like that I guess you are right. I hadn't put much thought into how a forum site map would be generated.

ikillbill Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 +100 for sitemap we need sitemap generator more than FURL! and who could have FURL without sitemap generator then!

Uh...everyone? Nobody requires a sitemap to use friendly urls (and vice versa).
Jaggi Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 google will make you a sitemap by using its site tools stuff. go there.
Stepashka Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 I try this mod, but surprisingly my page rank reduced from 4 to 3 :| when I removed that, my page rank back to 4 again.
BryanH Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 google will make you a sitemap by using its site tools stuff. go there. That takes a lot of set-up and configuration, plus shell access. it's definitely not easy. Well... hopefully someone develops a plug-in for this. It's rather important.
ikillbill Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 Uh...everyone? Nobody requires a sitemap to use friendly urls (and vice versa). :P nope, I meant, those who use FURL always use sitemap at the same time or even many of ppl who use sitemap don't use FURL actually yet sitemap seems to go before FURL often :)
Jaggi Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 I try this mod, but surprisingly my page rank reduced from 4 to 3 :| when I removed that, my page rank back to 4 again. is lower better...
bfarber Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 is lower better... I think higher is better, but from what I have heard and understand of page rank, his statement isn't making any sense to me. PageRank should be, as I understand it, the rank your page has based solely on the number of backlinks to it. A sitemap in no way affects the number of backlinks to the page, thus would not affect page rank.
