3DKiwi Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Hi. I'm looking to change hosts for a number of reasons. I currently have my site / forum running on a dedicated Linux server with PHP3 and MySQL 3.23. I want to change hosts and are looking at a host offering either a Linux server or a Windows server. Both with the current versions of PHP and MySQL. I'm more comfortable working in a Windows environment but are there any pitfalls running on Windows? Any issues moving my db? Thanks Nigel
bfarber Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Generally I'd recommend Linux for a webserver/database server. The only reason I could see to use Windows would be for ASP or MSSQL support.
Jason L Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I would also recommend Linux. If you not sure of which environment you need, then you probably are unaware of the differences between them. The Linux environment is a simpler solution for managing your PHP/MySQL needs.
FrostedPopTart Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 I'm a Linux fan SOLELY for server / hosting purposes. Mainly due to security / flexibility reasons. For everything else, there's Windows. [/end Mastercard pun]

[/end Mastercard pun] I'm with you completely on that one. Linux is absolutely outstanding to run a website from. But I'd hate to use it for my day-to-day computing.
ibprobattle.com Posted January 24, 2008 Posted January 24, 2008 i use linux for my server and surf off it on a regular basis as well once i got used to where everything was i actually enjoy using it and have recommended it to others just because of simple stuff like not needing antivirus on emails or being worried about trojans and crap like that
3DKiwi Posted January 25, 2008 Posted January 25, 2008 Thanks everyone. Looks like Linux is the winner. Nigel
