  1. I think that if the original poster is looking to disable that feature, that they're not going to completely disable it. While the IP Address may not be visible to Admin and Moderators by having the IP Address attached to their posts, that information will still be logged and attached to their posts.

Also, if you want the privacy of your members to remain anonymous, then tell them not to post anything libelous or slanderous. If the forum is hosted outside the United States, then it's your responsibility and the owner of the forum could be held liable for the posting of the slanderous message. Courts have ruled previously that creating a program or a modification to circumvent technology over someone's anonymity is a violation of law.

Matter of fact, Courts in the United States have ruled against websites that have installed these kind of filters.

What the original poster needs to do is place this warning in their forum rules and in their registration rules:

'the Administrator of <insert_website/forum_name_here> respects the privacy of each member. The posting of libelous or slanderous material is not permitted and each member is responsible for the activity of his or her account and that the Admin, Staff or website owner of this site cannot be held liable for what a member posts. As such, our website will respond to any requests from Law Enforcement or any subpoenas for information.'

Now, if you don't have such protections on your site or forums, then it's your own fault if you disable IP Tracking and you find yourself on the wrong side of an interrogation booth. I have a warning similar to that one but less wordy.

  2. The reason I can find for someone wanting to remove IP Tracking is if someone is operating a website/forum where members post .torrent downloads or Rapidshare download links. Since U.S. Law requires website owners, through court orders, to turn over log files from their website, I'm guessing that the owner of the site wants to protect his or her members from being dragged into court for downloading copyright material.

There's just no other way that I can see why someone, an Administrator, would want to disable IP Tracking. Disabling it just to disable it just doesn't make sense.

  3. Guys, Guys, Guys. This is, and I repeat, a very BAD IDEA.

Trust me, you do not want to disable IP Tracking. IPS Staff are correct. Disabling this will open security holes in your forum software. I don't know how many of you have this option set, but through the ACP, there is an anti-hacking tool that, if enabled, prevents someone from logging into your account while you are logged on by matching your IP Address. IP Tracking also allows you to search via IP Address if a new member registers. Well, if that member had been previously banned or you're banning spambots, let me assure you that spambots don't register the same email addresses or usernames and IP Addresses are unique.

This also allows you to search IP Addresses for those who create duplicate accounts. It's been a useful tool for me and I would never recommend disabling this feature. I think this might have something to do with maybe the fact that he's worried that people can be traced through his forums for downloading torrents since IP Addresses are logged. Disabling security features that protect your forum software is just a bad idea because it allows for the proliferation of spammers, spambots and computer hackers.

  4. Response: I have to agree with everyone. I'm already getting requests from members on my site who are wanting to know if the old classic style "blue" skin will be available for IPB 3. Most of the members of my community don't like the new default skin for IPB 3. Will the old classic style be made available for those who want it? Possibly maybe make it available for downloading through IPS Beyond.

  5. Whoa 30-90 second load times? Resource intensive? If IPB 3 is going to be like this on final version I doubt I'll upgrade. Hopefully IPS can fix these problems. I'm experiencing extremely slow loading times ...

  6. When I click on my name I get this error:

Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 7864320) (tried to allocate 122880 bytes) in /home/forumsi/public_html/admin/sources/classes/output/formats/html/htmlOutput.php on line 731

  7. Or, to rate the true quality of your posts.

Really? Then don't Rep him. That's how you have your voice.

The way I see it, Neg Repping is just another way for members to flame other members without posting.
  8. Exactly. I think having the Neg option turned on is just an excuse to some members to target others.

Also, I tend to find that those who have a problem or voice their concern over the ability to neg rep other members are those who want to neg rep other members.

  9. Is it going to be a full portal or just the one that is currently in IPB that is only designed to list IPB topics from your IPB software? I've never used the IPB Portal because it's too limiting and not very adaptable to place what you want.

  10. Calypso, this sort of thing happens all of the time. We must have gotten about a hundred of these type of topics. Whenever one is closed down someone creates another one until the discussion gets so ridiculous that IPS shuts it down.

  11. What people don't realize is that IPS is always finding bugs. Hence, the periodic upgrades 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 2.3.3, and so on ... they're know as patches. It's impossible to work out all of the bugs ... if IPS held the IPB software until there were no bugs than the new version of IPB would never get released.

  12. Sorry about that, Josh. Been preoccupied with a disruptive member on my site. I think I just used the wrong word. I didn't mean 'fake.' I should really get some sleep before I commit to posting a comment. Won't do that again.

At any rate, I was going by what has been said before and my predictions concerning the releases of previous Beta Releases as well as the intended verbal release date that IPS has announced, unofficially, and my own predictions about that June date.

I do apologize for being a little overdramatic and a bit cynical. :D

  13. So, that June release that IPS was referring to was just a fake release date to pacify customers? Well, going back to what I posted months ago, I did warn everyone that IPS wouldn't hit that Pre-June release date. I suspect that we'll see three or four RC releases before the final. If we're lucky, may we'll see a release date for September or worse yet, a Christmas release.

  14. RC2? I doubt we'll see an RC2. June is less than a week away and I'm sure that we'll see the final release sometime in the next week. Unless IPB pushes back the release for IPB 3 Final.
