Migrate from sub-folder to public_html

Hey there, I have a quick question.

What would the process look like if I wanted to migrate my forum

From: https://www.breatheheavy.com/exhale/

To: https://www.breatheheavy.com/

There's currently a Wordpress installation in the public_html folder.

My server host managers say they can transfer the files, but as far as URL redirects and all that... they can't help.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Are you removing the WordPress installation? If not, having both our software and WordPress in your root won’t work, I’m afraid.

Otherwise, the steps are pretty simple:

1. Remove WP instance

2. Move your files.

3. Follow steps at the link to change your URL: https://invisioncommunity.com/4guides/client-services/license-keys-urls-r344/#installchange

4. 301 redirect all requests from your old directory to the root. Make sure all URL parameters are passed.

Awesome, thank you! @Jim M

One more question... say we wanted to import the Wordpress posts to IPB. Is that a relatively simple or arduous task? There's about 30k Wordpress posts.

Use the converter app which you can download when you download your IPS install. The steps to do that are in there. I recently converted one of my WP sites to IPS.

You do have to have IPS Pages to do this though.

You're very welcome.

As mentioned by @Morrigan, you can use our free converter tool to convert the following from WordPress (have to have Pages as noted in screenshot). 30k records is not an obscene amount.

Here are our guides for working with the converters:

Thank you again! I do have Pages 🙂

What about how the stories will be categorized? Any idea how it sorts that from WP to IPB?

The converter will bring over your Categories from WordPress into Pages, and the records will remain within those. It will also convert any tags on individual records over as well.

Sorry for all the questions. Just want to make sure I'm super clear when making my road map for my server host managers.

Regarding "4. 301 redirect all requests from your old directory to the root. Make sure all URL parameters are passed."

Is that something my server managers would need to do? What is that process like?

Yes, this would need to be done by your hosting provider or server administrator. For a knowledgeable server admin, it's pretty easy. What they will do will highly depend on the web server being used but it's basically writing a configuration script to redirect requests from the old directory to the new.

Awesome thanks for the info. I'll circle back here if I run into any complications! Thank you guys for your support. 🙏
