You could create a custom profile field to collect a mobile number on sign up - but you can't use a phone number as the unique identifier (i.e. instead of a username/email address).

Facebook is using the mobile number as an "email address". It could probably be done but would either require a service to detect the phone domain and save it as an email, like @vtxt.net. Or to provide SMS services.
