Taken to last read post in a thread.

I am wondering is there a setting somewhere that makes it so that users who have read a thread and then go and visit it because there was a reply gets taken to the last message they read or to the newest message in the thread. Like kind of remembering where they last read too.

It only take me to the top of threads no mater if I have read it or not.

What so there is no memory for topics etc.

I am moving from xenforo and that automatically remembers where you were in a topic. Next time you visit said topic it will take you to the place you last read to.

This is quite a surprise that this is not available in IPS and a feature that is probably going to confirm I have waisted my money :( I know this is going to be a big complaint from my members. I check so many features etc before buying to ensure IPS would be a good fit and would not loose functions that users rely on. This function I overlooked as just assumed it would be standard behaviour. Oh dear.

I am mainly taking about topics and browsing forums but yes activity feed as well.

It is available. Of course it is. There is even a visual guide (a blue line in the default skin) to show you the newest unread post.

The links to the latest post will end with ?do=getNewComment or ?do=findComment&comment=XXX

Thanks yes I overlooked the fact i have no unread at the moment. So the dot doesn't show.

So the line is only a visual indication though. I still have to click as specific dot or link to get to the last unread rather than xenforo behaviour of clicking title and I automatically get taken to the last unread post within a topic?

Thanks @DawPi I don't understand why this is not default behaviour. I mean for an average users who is maybe not so technically minded (like our members) they would not think to click the dots nor think they did anything other than show there is new replies. It would mean me having to explain to everyone that they had to click dots and get them to relearn then still reply to a load of messages saying why isnt this doing what I expect. It just seems really odd to me. I mean we want to encourage content creation and user engagement yet a simple thing of clicking on a title and allowing users to continue where they left off has been made more complicated. I will take a look at that add-on just wish this was default behaviour or at the very least an option to turn this on/off

There is no way that is ultimately right or wrong here. You are just used to it a certain way (from another product) and see it as the right way because of that. But the same would be true the other way around. Imagine your most used forum would always just take you to the top of the topic unless you tell it otherwise. Now suddenly this changes and you land on post 36 on page 2 instead. What the hell? You would probably consider that wrong and confusing as well now.

That is true I suppose. It's what were used to but why would you want to go to the top of a topic if you have already read it. Thanks for the help guys.

On another note every time I tap in the reply box here it is already pre populated with the previous reply I sent is this a bug?

Having editor input saved locally in the browser is a feature of the software.
It shouldn’t keep the content once it was published of course.

Let's say I've marked the entire forum as read at one point. And I then find a somewhat old topic that I've never actually read before, I know I haven't read it from memory and that topic has new replies since I marked the entire forum as read; then I wouldn't want to be taken to the first unread, because I've never actually read the topic (even though it has been marked as such).

Personally I like it best that the title takes me to the first page, and that I can click on the blue icon if I want to go to the first unread. It always has been like this with IPB. But it depends somewhat on the context I'm in too. In certain activity streams or other scenarios than a regular topic listing within a forum it can make more sense that it should take you to the last unread, because of the context and presentation of it.
