Best? Worst? It's totally up to you to figure out what works for your site.....

Latest version of 5.x is 5.6.20 - it is supported by IPS.

Latest version of 7.x is 7.0.5 - while it does work, it is not currently supported by IPS due to versions of 3rd party libraries used (htmlpurifier, for example) not supporting PHP 7. That will change at some point though so keep an eye out on here for IPS stating that PHP 7 is supported.

I seen this on the 4.1.10 update:

Important: If you are running PHP 5.4 you will need to download this patch and apply it after you upgrade to 4.1.10. Version 4.1.11 will include the patch. Note that PHP 5.4 is very out of date and you should ask your web host to upgrade to a supported version of PHP.

I'm running PHP 5.4.19.... So if I wait until v4.1.11 it will automatically update me to a later version of PHP?

I'm hosted on GoDaddy fwiw...

it doesnt work that way. you have to have GoDaddy upgrade your php version.

My account shows I'm on the latest version I can get on, which is 5.4.X. Not sure why they don't have the next higher version listed as an update.

I suggest contacting GoDaddy support via phone; I did that for a client and got him on 5.6 and also got him the option for 7.0

I've put in cases to hostgator on this before and they just tell me to upgrade from shared to dedicated hosting but I don't need to and have already paid for 3 years of shared hosting.
