Help Needed to Solve Shared Server Problem

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have used IPB as a deadicated football/soccer forum since 2006.

cornwallfootballforum.com

I'm currently using HostGator Shared Linux Server package due to cost restraints (unlimited disk space and bandwidth), as a non profit site moving to a deadicated server with is not a option.

Over the past couple of weeks at a peak time of Saturday 1800-2000 GMT (London) when members log on to my site after football matches on Saturday evenings, my server overloads due to the ammount of users trying to access the site. Hostgator then shuts me down for 3 hours until CPU useage has gone down which is destroying my reputation.

I have the most upto date IPB Board, use Cloud Flare CDN, optimise my SQL databases, achive all posts over two months old, use most of the CPU optimising features in ACP.

Hostgator doesnt allow caching such as eAccelerator, Memcache, XCache on its shared servers.

System Overview

Total Server Memory - 32226 MB

Load Average 0.6

<?php ini_set('memory_limit', '128M')

Logs of the Peak CPU usage are provided below: CPU seconds used in the past hour: 4666.85999999998, 130% CPU

CPU Usage: 175% (warning) Snapshot 1 ******* 29969 42.5 0.1 453944 48552 ? RN 12:01 0:00 /opt/php53/bin/php-cgi /home3/******/public_html/forum/index.php ******* 29986 37.0 0.1 455732 50328 ? Can you recommend anything more I can do in order to help resolve this problem? Possibly a VPS?

Have you tried enabling Performance Mode prior to the expected spike?

Many thanks for the reply. Yeah at around 1700 and an outage still happens.

Unfortunately, there's not too much you can do on a shared hosting service, one other thing you could try, although I doubt it'll make the required improvements, is to run the Database Index Checker to make sure you've got all of the required indexes.

Shared Servers and claims of "unlimited" this or that are just marketing tools designed to hook you in as a client. After you are on a shared server the hosting problems become apparent as hosting issues will occur with over committed servers. Shared hosts can be like a $9 gym membership. You might get a lot of promises and a cheap membership but they will sell 20,000 memberships for a gym that holds 50 people. If you want better processing times you probably have no other alternative but to move up to one of their VPS options.

I had this problem last fall when a game release happened. Thought my WordPress install wasn't optimized enough since I had gone through tons of server stuff, CloudFlare, etc. Finally redirected site traffic to my IPB forum thinking that it would handle the traffic better. It didn't.

Moral of the story is... sometimes traffic just exceeds hardware limitations. Perhaps trying different tactic for monetizing your forum would help raise money for a dedicated server. I pay about $119 which isn't too bad.

Champagne can always be offered on a beer budget with the right type of people.

Especially because Good Beer isn't cheap. (at-least here in Canada)

Get a VPS. And not from hostgator...

Go to webhostingtalk.com and try your luck at shopping for a new vps there. If you get a good deal, you may not even end up paying more...

You have gone past the abilities of a shared hosting.

If you want my suggestion for budget vps for IPB, check ramnode.

could get cheap vps JUST for the database, all files and bandwidth remain as is. would help some.

but in all reality nothing will really overcome the shared host issue.
