Dedicated server?

Hello, for the past few weeks our forum has been booming with new members and since then, the site has been very slow and sometimes even offline, even during performance mode. After contacting both the host and IPS, turns out we've outgrown our shared hosting server. I quote:

You have 250 users in 15 minutes, that is way more than a shared host can handle in most cases. You also have a peak of 775 users in 15 minutes as well, with numbers in that area, you need a dedicated server to handle the load.

Not that I don't believe this, but this would mean going from a hosting package a couple of dollars per month, to something from +150 dollars per month, or at least at our current host. How are other people on here with big forums dealing with this?

Kind regards,

Arno.

If a dedicated server is out of your budget, you could also go with a good vps provider as well. the 250 in 15 minutes isn't outside of the capabilities of a good vps, however the 750 is pushing it in most cases. VPS's do vary however, some are built on very high end servers and some low end etc.

I roll with a pretty nice dedicated server for MLP Forums and my other sites. It's a very big step up from shared hosting, but as long as you're able to pay for it and are comfortable managing sysadmin tasks (or have someone capable running the server for you), you will not regret moving up.

I may be assuming a few things here, but a community large enough to require a dedicated server should be large enough to pay for it, too. If money is the main issue keeping you from upgrading your hosting, look at asking your members for donations, offering subscriptions, or even putting up ads. It only takes a few generous individuals to keep the site online for everyone else. :)

You don't need a dedicated server for just 250 users. Get yourself an SSD VPS, install nginx, php-fpm, mariaDB and you'll fly in no time

PS I have 750 users online in 30 minutes 4000+ max online but hosting costs me $10

so?

Meaning 750 users in 15 minutes is typically too much for a VPS, however as with dedicated servers, they come in all shapes and sizes. Advising someone to run that user count on a Typical VPS is only asking for them to have further issues.

If you are able to run 4000 users in 30 minutes for 10.00 a month, you are getting away with murder and expect a jail sentence soon lol

I don't get which part of my post was wrong? I certainly wasn't lying. We did peak at 4000 in 30 minutes a while ago but that's not the average. The average is around 600-700. But remember it is an SSD cloud server. With SSD, your disk access and latency times are significantly lower. Hence, your CPU utilization is lower, and your memory usage is lower (because you don,t need to cache many things).
