Well, for instance we add a where clause "members_display_name != ''" (or similar) because partial member accounts may not have a display name set yet. When we didn't, clients considered it a bug that members without a name were showing in the member list - but it's one additional check that MySQL has to perform.

Exactly.... just like hiding subforums.... an option to disable the extra checks on member list seems.... useful for big boards.
