Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt November 11, 2024
W13 Posted October 19, 2007 Posted October 19, 2007 - Select topics (or posts) and select 'copy'. Go somewhere else, and select 'paste' from the Moderator select-box.- Select which forums you want to backup from ACP (and a criteria for the posts: i.e. backup all posts older than ___ ).- An addition to Prune system: instead of just removing posts from database, make static HTML pages.
AndyF Posted October 20, 2007 Posted October 20, 2007 +1 for an additional option to the moderation options drop down "Copy This Topic" :)

Louis M. Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Would be really nice to have the copy topics to either static page or to another forum, in a manner similair to moving topics.
MitBfoL Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 Striving towards a more efficient IP board. Your ideas make so much sense to me. ++
Jason H Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 What happens after you copy them? Should replies added to either topic be added to the copy? Or should they be separate?And.. I have a half-assed idea of why you'd want this.. But can someone fill it up? Why would you want a COPY of a topic? Why have the same discussion in two places? I don't fully get that...The HTML archive.. Yeah.. That one really needs to happen. Especially for the mooks with 5 million post DBs. But how does it work, how does it break the topics out? Having a 600MB HTML page doesn't do any good. Backing it up is a concern as well.

Having a 600MB HTML page doesn't do any good. Backing it up is a concern as well.Once you copy a topic, you'll get almost the exact same screen as when you MOVE a topic (after check-boxing it). A check-box option will read: Copy replies as well? Also, there can be MANY reasons as to why you'd want a copy option: primarily, for backup (that 'rules' sticky that took forever to write might get messed up if you change stuff and face the "BB-code error - BB-codes not closed properly") - Also, copy-posts/topics can be useful if you want to have the same thing posted on several forums.... if different sub-forums have different audiences, and you want the opinions of all of them, you just copy the topic and paste it into the 3 or 4 different forums).--The HTML archive: one .html page for each topic-page. So if a topic has 10 pages, there will be 10 .html files. SO, when you're viewing a certain topic that has been 'archived' permanently as an HTML file, it will look like this:(red is PHP, green is the static HTML included in the PHP)HeaderMember-barNavigationPage numbersTHE POSTSPage numbers (again)Users reading this topicForum Jump Drop DownSkin SelectorCopyright
FrostedPopTart Posted October 29, 2007 Posted October 29, 2007 I agree, a copy topic feature to copy topics from one forum to another (keeping member / group permissions in mind, of course) would be a GREAT idea. It would save a lot of time due to the fact of having to copy and paste all the markup, smilies, etc.
walk127 Posted October 30, 2007 Posted October 30, 2007 We paid $400 to IPS to have a copy topic and copy posts functions added. Not half a day after they received payment, they said they had the modification done, making us think they had done it for others. I don't understand why it hasn't been to added to the script. vBulletin has had this functionality forever. As to why the functionality is needed, we use the copy posts extensively in trying to keep posts on topic in threads. There are many times when someone addresses more than one topic in a post. We copy those posts to the proper thread, then edit out or dim the off-topic parts. Without the copy function, mods had to copy/paste quoted bits into their own new posts, which was a mess. We use the copy topics primarily when we are working on our library of reference threads or otherwise doing work on splitting threads or moving posts, where it is prudent to keep the original intact until the work is done. The function really is essential.

Ciwan Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 So has this feature been added or not ? Because I REALLY NEED this !! Also I had it on my previous forum running SMF (custom coded by some guy I paid money to) .. I have paid $60 to IPB Staff to do the conversion for me .. but all they have done is convert the forum to IPB 3.0.2 WITHOUT all my tweaks :( I had a Shoutbox, and now that isn't present either :( I would like to know, if they will add them extra tweaks that I had from my previous forum as part of the conversion .. cause I think they should, that is why I have paid for. Convert and have all the functionality from before.

I don't think anything that is not default in IPB would be copied over from another board software, as that would involve someone sitting down and actually writing a modification for you from scratch to achieve this. Having said that, there are three "Copy Topics" modifications for 2.3.x that I am aware of (two free and one paid) , so I would expect one of these if not more to appear for 3.0.x at some point soon anyway. :) Regarding a Shoutbox, take a look at our Community Projects IP. Shoutbox (link in my signature)
Management Charles Posted September 6, 2009 Management Posted September 6, 2009 There is absolutely no way for us to convert "tweaks" in another forum software. You are looking at PHP, HTML, CSS, etc. code to convert and that's not a conversion of the database. I don't think we have ever had anyone even ask that before :)
Ciwan Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Can you link me to any Copy Topics Modifications for IP Board 3.0.3 PLEASE ? That Shoutbox doesn't work for me, I've tried everything ... I just can not get it to work :( I would appreciate any help with it. Thanks

I just can not get it to work :( I would appreciate any help with it. Thanks I am not yet aware of any Copy Topic modification for 3.0.x yet, sorry. As my post above I know of three for 2.3.x. I'm sure one will appear at some point soon though. Regarding IP. Shoutbox, it would be best to post in the appropriate Community Projects forum for it > IP. Shoutbox, someone should be able to help you with any issues you are having with it, although if you have just installed it, you will need to setup the permissions for it (just mentioning this here as it seems to be the most common question) :)
walk127 Posted September 7, 2009 Posted September 7, 2009 I guess you won't be too happy if IPS releases it in the next version as a feature!Actually, I would have been thrilled. We're holding with an old version of 2.x, because being able to copy posts is something we can't do without. I know copying can be complicated, but I wish they'd at least start with the basic capability we have now from the mod. I love the board otherwise.
