We have had an IPB license and maintained upgrades for over 18 years.  Our site started very small, but has grown so that we had to upgrade our server plan and was migrated to another server with more space.  Our site was running smoothly on our old server.  The new server is running a different operating system than the old one, and we are now having issues.  The server migration and tech support teams have been working for weeks now to try and figure out the problem, but have exhausted their efforts.  They have recommended we contact IPB to see if you can help.  The files on both servers have been re-synced multiple times.

The main problems are:

1) We are unable to attach files/images, or download file/simages from within the forum area.  We have an IPB Download app that is functioning smoothly; we can upload and download using the app.

2) Our internal e-mail is working sporadically.  The validating e-mail to or from new registering members is mostly not working.

3) No errors are being logged when attaching or downloading fails, or when e-mails fail.  The e-mail client is empty.

The host checked all site permission settings to sync with server settings.  The MySQL was upgraded from V5.? to V8, but the problems persist.  I'm attaching a screen from the host tech support.

We've been using IPB for almost 2 decades and we really need your help.

You would need to ensure that the folders/files are owned by the correct server user/group as often when transferring servers this can be incorrect and thus cause read/write issues.

The following folders need to be writable for our software to work:

  • applications
  • datastore
  • plugins
  • uploads and all sub-folders of uploads

You would want to verify that your email is configured correctly in ACP -> System -> Email Settings. If there are no email errors there, there is really little we can provide as the software is successfully handing off the email to your email provider.

I've already touched on uploading and emails. Please see above.

I'm a little confused by what you mean by when downloading fails. Is this in our Downloads application or where? There would be some kind of error in ACP -> System -> System Log if it is a software error. If it is a server error or file does not exist, it will tell the user on screen

Thank you Rastafari, I will check on this.

Jim, thanks so much for your reply.  I forwarded this info to the server team.  Their response:

I see that you wish to set the mentioned files/folders to be writable. I could not find the mentioned files/folder under the path /home2/hsfzntte/public_html.
If these files/folders are present under the specific folder, please provide us with the exact path so that we can look further.

I really appreciate the help.

I’m afraid, this isn’t something we can answer. It would be where you installed the software at on your server.

What is the url of your forum? According to your host's reply, your forum doesn't seem to be installed in the root of the domain. The aforementioned folders should be present inside whatever folder that you have used to install your Ipb forum

Jim, I have found the files and folder you mentioned in the cpanel.  They are under our home directory/public_html/forums.  The permissions for public_html is set for 0750.  The directories applications, data store, plugins and uploads/subfolders are set at 0755.  Files are set at 0644.

Thanks so much for trying to help.

I just found something very interesting.  Under the screenshots directory, there was a folder for 12/24, so I opened this folder.  There I found listed the images I had tried to upload into texts.  I clicked on each one using the 'view' setting and the images were indeed there, so they are actually uploaded.  For some reason, when attaching them we get the error message 'there was a problem uploading the file'.  I had also tried to attach a zip file; it might be in one of the other directories.  The permissions for these image files is 0644.

Thanks for your help, somehow I fixed it myself.  Under files 'Storage Settings', Attachments, the path was from the old configuration and when I switched it to the new, it immediately worked.

Thanks again.

Glad to hear you got that sorted. Just to mention above, please do ensure you are not using PHP 8.3, as mentioned. Version 4 does not yet support that PHP release
