Custom Editor Buttons Evaporate on Updates

I had a custom button on my editor and since the last update it is missing.

Is there any "protected" section of the Editor that we could use to store custom buttons so we don't have to recreate them each update?

I don't lose my buttons on upgrade and have not seen that happen before.  

I don't think there is anything special for "protecting" buttons.

There is nothing that would remove buttons during the upgrade process. If thats happens on your instance, there was something went wrong there. Is this happening every update?
