PayPal fails when item has renewal terms

I have found that PayPal does not work as a payment gateway when an item with renewal terms is selected. 

If the option "Pay renewal costs automatically" is checked, this error is shown when I press the "Place Order and Pay" button:

There was an error processing the payment. Please try a different payment method or contact us for assistance.

If the option "Pay renewal costs automatically" is not checked everything works as expected.

Billing agreements are not a default. You need to have the proper plan and settings in your PayPal’s developer account. And the service is also not available in every country.

I am currently experiencing this error as well. Anyone found a workaround?

It’s a generic “something went wrong” error. There is no single cause for it and so also no single “workaround”. Double-check your settings, both in the ACP as well as your PayPal developer account. Again, automatic renewals won’t work for everyone. You need to have access to that feature. If you still can’t find the problem, you can open a support ticket.
