Feature Addition: Following People

So this is primarily because I have been SPAMMED with follow alerts for people I follow because I occasionally like their content and want to check it out since I turned on the "Notify me of things I follow" setting. Thing is, people aren't like normal followed content as there isn't just one thing to follow.

That being said (and I understand that this may have to wait for a future point version of IPB4) I would like to propose a feature/change to the people following procedure/workings.

I think it would be more prudent if, when you follow someone there is either a list of "notify me when" instead of an all or nothing. Like with some people like @Michael I'd love to follow his downloads because I love them to death! But maybe I don't want to see his blog posts or every time he posts to a support topic in the forum. I should be able to choose to follow what he uploads without being forced to be notified of ALL OF IT.

I turned this on and immediately (like within 20 minutes) I had somewhere upwards of 49 notifications of (sorry darling) @bfarber posting in threads that I had no interest in but mixed in the middle there I also had notifications that I missed because I was quite literally spammed with notifications.

The problems I see with the way it is now (all or nothing) is that I have members that will go on 100 post, posting tirades in a day which means that if I want to follow their blogs or gallery images (for example) than they will be lost in the mix.

As an alternative, if doing it per person is too much I could live with being able to choose what I watch (being notified per application instead).

Thank you!

Morri,

That's a great idea for a mod! So much so, after reading your post I hammered one out in the form of a plugin. It gave me the opportunity to get familiar with the inner workings of the IPB4 notifications system a little bit too.

Anyway, thought you might like to know about it. I've uploaded the plugin to the IPB4 marketplace category, but as of the moment, I guess it needs to be approved first before you can access it.

Have a great day!

I didn't even know there was a category in the marketplace for IPb4. But this solves one of my biggest annoyances I had with IPb4. I will definitely be using this when the time comes :D

Now if you could make an IPB4 compatible mod for this

you'd be my hero and solve all my complaints for IPB4 hehe :P

You better use the plugin from @Kevin Carwile, since they're happy with it and won't change it:

Interesting! :)

So if I uncheck the 'all content' and choose none in specific contents, I won't be bothered with thousand notifications a day ?

If it works like that, congratulations! You made an offical spam feature more useful/less annoying now. :)

@Kevin Carwile 's mod looks perfect, but we shouldn't need to resort to mods to fix issues like this. Please IPS, just implement something like this by default. On medium to large forums, there are very few people who want to be notified about every post that someone else makes, but it's entirely possible that people would want to be notified about status updates, new file uploads by a member, or new calender events. Please rethink your decision not to listen to the (quite considerable numbers of people) who have voiced opposition to these changes and either implement a mod like this as stock or at least do something to reduce the issue.

I'm sure that IPB4 will receive a number of feature enhancements over it's lifetime and this may be one of them. Right now it's brand new software built from the ground up. They're focused on getting a stable release out into the world before they start looking at stuff like that.

But in the meantime, mods should work fine. I can tell you, the effort that they've put into the developer tools and the flexibility of the framework should lead to some really great new 3rd party addons coming our way.

I've been having a blast working on some new apps for IPB4 over the last couple months.
