Kurt De Pauw Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Hello, @ my VPS distributor I have the opportunity to use the below Linux distributions. What is the best distribution to use with IPS ? - Gentoo - CentOs - Debian - Elastix - Ubuntu - Scientific - Linux Arch - Linux PBXware - openSUSE - SME Server - Mageia
Grumpy Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Doesn't really matter. Go with centos if you don't really have any specific preference.
euantor Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Personally I'm a fan of Debian - mostly because I prefer apt to yum.
zbahadir Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Personally I'm a fan of Debian - mostly because I prefer apt to yum. I always use debian.
Dmacleo Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 i use cent as I know it works well with cpanel but thats really just a preference, and a habit.
Aussie Cable Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 Centos 6.3 x64 because we use WHM/cPanel
Makoto Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 I used to use CentOS. More specifically CentOS 5.5. Packages were so old they became largely incompatible with half of the programs I used or tried to compaile, I ended up switching to Debian right before CentOS 6's long overdue release. I don't really have a problem with CentOS, but I'm pretty grounded to using Debian as my server's operating system. Actually almost opted for trying FreeBSD a few times though.
Rhett Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 Centos packages are all dependent on the repositories you are using. The current 5.x is 5.8 and there are no issues from my experience with 5.x or 6.x, however 6.x has better support for ext4 which performs much better. Centos is the most widely support OS for web servers as well.

Martin A. Posted December 18, 2012 Posted December 18, 2012 RHEL ?! I must be the only one that uses RHEL  It's still on the chart ;) http://w3techs.com/blog/entry/debian_is_now_the_most_popular_linux_distribution_on_web_servers

srpurdy Posted December 24, 2012 Posted December 24, 2012 Right now I use CentOs 5 and 6 strictly in 64bit.. I played with pretty much all of the distro's I just like CentOs the most, but probably because it was the first distro I used and I got used to it.
