VT-Vincent Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 In August of 2005, I purchased an IP.Board for my website. Due to many events in my personal life that prevented me from actively maintaining my website and continually renewing my IP.Board License, my website remained on IP.Board 2.0.4. Due to the massive ammount of known security holes in this version, my website was subject to several attacks and was recently suspended due to the security risks the board posed to my webhost's server. After being notified this issue existed, I proceeded to contact IPS customer service in order to renew my license and install an updated version of the board to prevent this type of issue. I was told by customer service that there is no way my license can be renewed and it is effectively worthless. I am extremely disappointed in the quality of the product as well as the abysmal level of customer support provided. As it stands, I am currently sitting on an unusable version of the forum, which IPS is not willing to let me PAY to fix. I will certainly be looking at other forum options and I would recommend any potential clients avoid IPS and it's products at all costs. - Former IP.Board Customer
Alex Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Its a bit of tough luck really, everyone was informed of the license changes and how to renew, if you missed that period, its your fault.
Keith J. Kacin Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 It is likely we do not carry the same license that you once had, so there is no way to renew it, I'm afraid. You can purchase a new license, which effectively what you would be doing by renewing as well.
Please Delete Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 This poses an interesting question, I am currently running version 2.3.5 and have the following paid invoices.Paid (4 invoices) ID Title Date Amount 39390 New Order 02/09/05 $69.95 66541 Renewal: Invision Power Board Yearly License 02/09/06 $69.95 112873 Renewal: IP.Board: Standard License 11/09/07 $25.00 166384 Renewal: IP.Board: Standard License 05/12/08 $25.00 I have been paying for my license the last year even though I am not currently running a board. What would happen if I took a year off and did not upgrade. Would I have to buy another license or could I just renew?

Management Charles Posted June 5, 2008 Management Posted June 5, 2008 Since you kept your license active, your yearly license has been remade into a Standard License. Under the terms of the license today, in that case you can renew for 6 months of service at $25 at any time. As Keith said, for account specifics it's always a good idea to send in a ticket so someone can look at your account individually.
Please Delete Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I don't understand that answer, I am sure other members will be wondering the same thing. It is a valid legit question and it needs to be answered. It is a difference between paying $150.00 new license or a renewal fee of $25. Why can that simple question not be answered here? Yes/No or you can break for 1 year/ 2 years without penalty Simple
Management Charles Posted June 5, 2008 Management Posted June 5, 2008 I'm sorry I thought I did answer it by saying you can renew at $25 at any time :)
Please Delete Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Thank you for the clarity, I thought that was the case. I have been with IPB since the free versions and will support them as long as I can. My last two renewals were made even though I am not running a board. I love the company and community with all my heart and think it is honestly the best product of its kind on the market. It would however have been difficult to cough up another license should I ever decide to take a break.

I thought you had meant as long as I did not let it expire Sorry again
Alex Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 As I remember, as long as your license says Standard License you can break for as long as you want and renew at $25. However, back in the yearly license days, if you did not renew when it ported over to standard license within the given time limit, you would have to buy a new license. This is, what I believe, has happened with the topic opener.
Please Delete Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 HeHe Lucky for my I renewed on time. I remember talking to the customer service agent and he said I was a good repeat customer and I still fell into the time frame. That brings up a very good point I would like to make.... Under the new rules only current clients have access to IPS resources. I don't know if expired license holders still get the occasional news emails that IPB sends out so I wonder if it would be possible to have some kind of a newsletter everyone could sign up for. This way any changes to licensing rules would be emailed to clients (expired or current). Until that happens I guess one could also subscribe to the Company News forum and get instantly notified of any changes.
Alex Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I know that the newsletter system IPS use allows anyone to get the emails, its just like a RSS feed of the company news forum.
VT-Vincent Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 I see... I was unaware there was any time frame I would be permitted to upgrade within, as I never received any such email. Unfortunately, I have found myself purchasing an IP.Board again, simply to keep my existing database, and a similar feature set. I wish I would have known about the upgrade opportunity... :(

bfarber Posted June 5, 2008 Posted June 5, 2008 Phew, that took a lot of work to find. The change over was in Sept of 2006. :)http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?...t&p=1417891
Mat Barrie Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 Phew, that took a lot of work to find. The change over was in Sept of 2006. :) http://forums.invisionpower.com/index.php?...t&p=1417891 Oh yes, I remember it well - it's where most of my post count came from. So, um, let's say my yearly license expired in...
.Ryan Posted June 6, 2008 Posted June 6, 2008 # Lifetime License holders will see no change to their service. Lifetime License holders will still receive technical support and upgrades. # Perpetual License holders will see no change to their service. Upgrades will still be made available and support renewal will continue at the current, yearly rate. So why can't they renew now? And still have the old package(s)? I can't complain about $50 per year, but I am essentially buying a entire new IP. Board license when I renew my current boards, excluding gallery, downloads, and blog. So if the price takes I hike I'm gonna unload everything :P
Mat Barrie Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 So why can't they renew now? And still have the old package(s)? I can't complain about $50 per year, but I am essentially buying a entire new IP. Board license when I renew my current boards, excluding gallery, downloads, and blog. So if the price takes I hike I'm gonna unload everything :P Simple - because the OP had an old Yearly, which expired. You are making a mistake in assuming Yearly and Perpetual are the same - they aren't. Yearly licenses didn't renew, ever. They expired. Then you bought a new one. You can't renew that as it's not a package as soon as it expires. Perpetual licenses did renew, and for all intents and purposes never expired (though their support component did). Lifetime licenses never expired (any component).
