My friend and I, who both work at an ISP, had an idea for a forum and bought an IPB to run it on. We never had any problems with it but never got it off the ground either. I had a friend with a rather large forum (500-1000 posts per day, around 300 members) that was running on a free server and decided to move it over to our IPB board (not the database, just the board). We were noticing the board was running slow, so we moved it to a faster server. The board picked up speed dramatically and we opened the board for registration. Of course, activity grew by probably 6 or 7 times and the board started running slowly again. We upgraded to the latest version of IPB and we only have one mod installed (D2 Shoutbox). We figured we probably need to tweak the php or apache on the Mac server somehow to optimize it for the board. We're not running anything else on the server; only the board is running on it. It's a PowerMac G4 with Dual 1.2 GHz processors, and 4 Gb of ram and a 1 terabyte harddrive. It's in a data center because we work for the ISP and have the server on site. We have a 90 Meg connection in this data center and the server is on a Gig LAN. mysql is on a separate server and is running great, so we're pretty sure it's not that. It's most likely php or apache. We've seen load average as high as 11 or 12.
