Restore Option

Well i was surfing the ipsbeyond and many users have problems with restoring the database, why can't you add an option in the Admin Tab for restoring?like the backup option? it will help many users...

Because the Admin CP is using the very same database it would be restoring. At the very least, it would kill your Admin session while you were performing the restore. At the worst, it could stall halfway through the restore, not have restored your account, and thus you'd be locked out of the place where you could restore this at. There are tools like phpMyAdmin or bigdump where you can restore databases a lot more safely than this, so this feature isn't necessary.

There's another topic on this.. and everyone knows what i'm going to say..

Security.

I don't like the idea of a restore feature in the ACP for that reason.

I definately see how it'd be useful for the more novice users.. But I can also see 100 ways it could go bad..

I mean.. It seems like a no-brainer idea for a rotating support password to be in there for support to access (I know how much you all love "Could you provide...") but when you think about it.. First, what about users who don't want to give us access? Legitimate concern. Second.. Even if it was a rotating password based on some day, month, week, hour calculation.. the code is open.. Anyone could find that in the code and access anyones forum..

OK i understand, but why can't you update the manual so that we can read that:"when you restore the BD in phpmyadmin you have to recache the forum and rebuild posts, users, attach"...

Because on the tutorial in ipsbeyond it only says how to restore the BD in phpmyadmin...
Can you write a tutorial and update the manual?

as its a security concern, why not offer the admin an option, when installing the board to enable the feature by giving it a password that only the board installer will know. I see it as the only way of authorising the true root admin to perform a restoration via adminCP...

You guys are missing the point - it's practically impossible to do this in a stable manner. Setting aside the fact that the data has to be removed first (via the ACP and the reinserted, there are numerous resource issues that would prevent this from working AT ALL on MOST hosts).

I refuse to add in a feature that 10 people might be able to use, but which will introduce thousands of tickets from people who tried to use it and it failed, and now their board is completely unusable. We provide technical support for our users, and 99% of hosts will assist with restoring a database, if the phpmyadmin route is too difficult. :)

bfarber, what about updating the manual with a tutorial something?

We have appropriate instructions for importing (and exporting, for that matter) a database backup in our knowledge base. Furthermore, we offer a database transfer service. Transferring your database from one host to another isn't really inside the scope of our software, so while we do try to assist, I don't really see where it would fit into any manual we offer.

Just wondering, where are they? I was looking through the KB, and couldn't find any.

I know how to work with databases/PMA, but I couldn't find anything explaining it for those who don't.

I love big dump and it works wonders so I agree with you.
