Gogf Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 It looks horrific. If there's going to be some sort of notification, can't we just have a line of regular text (perhaps italics?) underneath it?
Mat Barrie Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 It looks horrific. If there's going to be some sort of notification, can't we just have a line of regular text (perhaps italics?) underneath it?I think it's quite nice really, but it is alterable by simply changing the CSS if you don't like it.
Gogf Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 The default bar should look decent in the default skin. There are forum admins who don't know or don't want to mess with the CSS. While I'm not one of them, there are plenty of forums - such as this one - that I may end up posting on that use the default skin. We can't dismiss all criticisms of the default by saying "it's modifiable." Do you honestly think that black looks remotely in place in the lightly toned blue default skin?
Management Charles Posted September 24, 2006 Management Posted September 24, 2006 The problem here is opinion. Right here we have one person that likes it and one that does not.If we changed it to something else we would have the same situation just with different people :)That's why things are customizable so you can change them to your individual tastes.

Shouldn't it be a shade of blue to match the skin?
Gogf Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 But still, why is it black? Shouldn't it be a shade of blue to match the skin?I emphatically second this. Regardless of what individuals think looks good, it should look similar to the rest of the default skin. Show me what part of the default skin looks remotely like this thick black bar.
Logan Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 I like it quite a bit also :PDoesn't work in IE 6 though, just see a mini version of the image and people probably don't think to click it.
TCWT Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 I don't like it, looks better with a lighter color.
Dlf Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Minior change? User option of what they want to see: Current, or what gogf is suggesting, or both. Just idea.
UBERHOST.NET Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 But still, why is it black? Shouldn't it be a shade of blue to match the skin? What color shoes do you wear with a blue suit? Blue?
Antony Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Minior change? User option of what they want to see: Current, or what gogf is suggesting, or both. Just idea.Errm... how about people just edit the CSS. Or we might as well have an option for every concivable display change. I do think the blue bar would be a better option, though again just my opinion. What color shoes do you wear with a blue suit? Blue? :lol:If I had a blue suit, then yes.
.Timmy Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 What color shoes do you wear with a blue suit? Blue? :lol:I personally would love blue shoes.
Gogf Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Errm... how about people just edit the CSS. Or we might as well have an option for every concivable display change. I do think the blue bar would be a better option, though again just my opinion.Because a lot of people use the default skin. As I've said before, it should look the best it can. The black alone looks fine, but it looks totally out of place in this skin. Is it really that difficult to just change it to a dark blue?
UBERHOST.NET Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Is it really that difficult to just change it to a dark blue? No, but then the devs like the black so why would they want to change it based on a handful of opinions when it can easily be changed by the purchaser? And if the purchaser doesn't want to get his hands messy then he can simply import a different skin. I'm sure that for every person that doesn't like the black you'll find someone who does.
MindTooth Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 Is this an option in the ACP to turn off? Or is the suggestion about that?Birger :)
Gogf Posted September 24, 2006 Posted September 24, 2006 No, but then the devs like the black so why would they want to change it based on a handful of opinions when it can easily be changed by the purchaser? And if the purchaser doesn't want to get his hands messy then he can simply import a different skin. I'm sure that for every person that doesn't like the black you'll find someone who does. You're missing the point. I don't have a problem with the black in and of itself (well, I don't particularly like that style, but I could deal with it). The problem is that it doesn't go with the skin. Is there really any debate about this point? I don't see the logic behind making parts of the skin stand out as totally out of place, no matter how good they look on their own.Is this an option in the ACP to turn off? Or is this suggestion about that?Birger :)That would be nice too, although I'm assuming it's there.
UBERHOST.NET Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 You're missing the point. I don't have a problem with the black in and of itself (well, I don't particularly like that style, but I could deal with it). The problem is that it doesn't go with the skin. Is there really any debate about this point?Well of course there's debate about that point, since you're assuming that everyone feels the same as you do. It's only a matter of opinion whether it does or doesn't go with the skin. Obviously the good people at IPS feel that it goes with the default skin, or they wouldn't have included it. And naturally black fits in. Look at the color of the text your reading this very moment, lol.
Mat Barrie Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 That would be nice too, although I'm assuming it's there. There is a feature in the ACP to allow you to turn it off, it's called "Edit CSS (Advanced Mode)" in "Skin Manager" under "Look and Feel"
Gogf Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 There is a feature in the ACP to allow you to turn it off, it's called "Edit CSS (Advanced Mode)" in "Skin Manager" under "Look and Feel"There is a general sense here that everybody who runs an IPB forum has a complete grasp on how to use some of the more advanced features. While I am able to generally navigate through the CSS - which is not particularly easy, considering its length and the plethora of properties contained inside - I am confident that there are forum admins who are not. The trend in IPB 2.2 is towards being intuitive, and having a toggleable option to remove such a major and basic feature in General Settings is definitely something that people would expect.Again, I'm not saying that I wouldn't understand how to remove it through the CSS. The fact is, however, that there are people who wouldn't, and that the rest of us would save considerable time being able to use a simpler option. While I can't think of any at the moment, I'm confident that there are plenty of options that you can set in the Admin CP that could be modified through the CSS or templates.
U2 Fan Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 We can't dismiss all criticisms of the default by saying "it's modifiable." Do you honestly think that black looks remotely in place in the lightly toned blue default skin?Well said, Gogf! You took the words right out of my mouth! The black is horribly out of place in the default (blue) skin. Yuck.
TCWT Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 and why does the bar have to be so wide and text so huge? it was fine like in 2.1
danell Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 I think it looks alright aswell, though granted it doesn't match the blueness of the default skin.I still think it looks sexy.
UBERHOST.NET Posted September 25, 2006 Posted September 25, 2006 Again, I'm not saying that I wouldn't understand how to remove it through the CSS.Then why are you so adamant about this? Those who don't like it and have no idea how to follow instructions can at least speak for themselves, I would think?
