  1. I hadn't heard of Shadowbox. I've just been to their site and tried it out. Much better than Lightbox. The question is, how does one integrate it into IPB?

  2. Good luck with this. I have disabled Lightbox on my site as I was getting too many complaints about it. e.g. Can't save images, images appear under flash banner ads

  3. I agree. A block that is only updated every 5 or 10 minutes would be perfectly adequate.

If the "View new content" search is such a resource hog then maybe IPS needs to rethink how members browse new posts. My guess is the typical user clicks on View new content and then clicks the topic that interests them. If they don't reply they can then either press the back button to get back to the new posts or do what I do and press the View new content button again. You would certainly need to press the View new content button if you had replied to the topic. So what I am saying in normal use the average user is hitting the View new content link quite a lot.

  4. Not sure what the resource issue is here. All you're doing is basically displaying a block that contains the first 10 results from a "View new content" button press. I had a mod on my 2.3.6 site and no issues with it slowing down my forum. I am running a dedicated server with a medium sized and active forum.

I just want a block that displays the last 10 replies on my Portal front page. This allows members to quickly keep up to date with the most recent forum activity.

  5. I suggest that you load up a test site and find out for yourself. I'm about to upgrade my 2.3.6 site next week. Things have settled down now and I'm reasonably happy with how my test forum using version 3 is working.

  6. Sorry this doesn't grab me. The difference with Wordpress and other apps is they are loaded on your computer. IPB is loaded on a remote server and this no doubt creates a number of issues. I find the current method pretty straight forward and probably much more reliable than any any automated system.

  7. I don't take my board offline to do it. I use the linux code as per the backup and restore instructions in the knowledge base in your account here. I log in via SSH using a free shell called "Putty". Copy and paste the backup code in and 30 seconds later my db is backed which is around 200mb in size. I then download via ftp. Restoring is similarly easy.

The advantage of using SSH is you don't get page timeout errors and it's much quicker.

  8. I use the Portal on my site here and I'm pretty happy with it after doing some customizing. I'm just emulating this on my version 3 test site and will upgrade later this year. As for controlling pinned topics, yeah that could be handy but it's no big deal for me. I have a news forum that only admins can start new topics. Only that forum gets used for the portal articles. Pinning is useful if you want an older news item to remain on the front page after newer news items have been posted.

  9. That's in version 2 not version 3.

However in version 3 you can get "Today's active content" by clicking on its link at the bottom of the forum view page. Not quite as user friendly as before but at least it's there. The old option had a drop down where you could select today, this week and a few other options.

  10. I'm on what I would regard as a big site. I won't be upgrading until a few issues are sorted out e.g. view new posts.

The skin issue one is nonsense. Just a matter buying a good skin from the likes of Dragonfly who make professional looking skins for a very modest price. The new IPB3 skin for me is about as boring as the previous default skins were and I would never contemplate using it.

  11. I think we all get these. Every day I get people signing up new accounts and they never validate them. I get up to 10 bounced emails every day where the email address that they have used is bogus.

When I'm on line I delete all accounts that haven't been validated within 3 hours. In my opinion if someone wants to join your site then they sign up and validate within minutes. I receive very few complaints by doing this and it helps to reduce spam.

I regularly clean out the validating table in the database as this fills up with useless data which is of no use once a validating member has been deleted.

  12. dieselpowered - Version 3 would be feature locked by now. I suggest learning how to add stuff in. I've gone from knowing absolutely nothing to being able to edit skins and customize my board. It's not really that hard. I use a banner ad rotation management system. Just a matter of pasting in one line of code in the member bar area. Banner ads show up on every page.
