  1. Hi, I'm notified by Bing web tools that meta descriptions and meta titles are too long. I can see that for example one topic called, "Hotpoint Ultima Wt721 Error Code F10 Help?" has the following meta title - <title>Hotpoint Ultima Wt721 Error Code F10 Help? - UK Washing Machine Repair Questions - Washing machine Forum</title> I can't think why the name of the forum and parent forum would be added to the title? It makes virtually every meta title way too long, and also makes all topics have the same duplicate forum names added. I can see that the forum title is also added on topics in this Set Up & Guidance forum, so it's obviously meant to be like that. Is there a reason for doing it that I'm unable to think of? And apart from editing every post manually, is there a way to remove the name of the forums inside each meta title, please so that the meta title is just the title?

I can't see any reference to "discussion/?lang" but there is only one incidence of lang in the source of a forum topic page and it's in the header - <!DOCTYPE html> <html lang="en-GB" dir="ltr"> <head> <meta charset="utf-8"> I have no 3rd party plugins. It's strange because if I add ?lang=de to even the url of this forum and this topic, the page displays as normal like it does on my forum. For some reason, Bing webmaster tools is saying there are urls to my pages with ?lang=de and ?lang=dk that are redirected to the proper page causing duplicates. Google webmaster tools doesn't warn me about it, so I thought it must be an anomaly with Bing tools, but their tech support just said to contact my developer.

I just realised that if I add the ?lang=de to any of the pages on my forums they display the correct page albeit in English, so that could explain why Bing says that there is a large number of URLs pointing to the same canonical URL if all pages on my forums somehow have redirects for ?lang=de and ?lang=dk
  5. Hi there. I keep getting emails from Bing Webmaster tools telling me there are a "large number of pages pointing to the same canonical URL". When I investigate, they list the following - / (root) ?lang=de ?lang=dk All of which point to my homepage. Could you tell me does Invision forums create any redirects that could account for this? I've scoured htaccess files and Invision control panel but cannot find anything, yet there is no doubt that the ?lang= URLs are definitely redirected to the home page. This makes no sense to me, not only because of the duplicate content but because I would have expected for example the ?lang=de to redirect to a German page, otherwise what is the point? I should add that my homepage is not the forums it's a sparsely populated WordPress page so if this is obviously nothing to do with Invision please accept my apologies and I can delete it.
  6. Thanks Randy. I did that 3 times, plus I deleted my browser cache before posting. Maybe the browser cache clear only came into effect after I restarted the browser later as it eventually fixed itself?
  7. Yes, thanks, the update completed successfully and everything works ok. The issue was that each time I logged into my dashboard, it said there was an incomplete update and gave the option to complete it. Whenever I clicked to complete the update it reported that there was no update to complete. After this I was taken to my dashboard where everything looked okay. As it happens, I just logged in for the fifth time and this time the messages disappeared. Another puzzle.
  8. Thanks again Mark. I've been running IPS forums for well over 10 years, I've never had files go missing before. How is that even possible? The forums have been and were working perfectly okay. I uploaded all of the files and the upgrade appeared to work okay. But now whenever I log into my control panel I get the following message - Your site is ready to upgrade A new version is available to install and it is strongly recommended that you complete the upgrade process for this new version before continuing to the AdminCP. Sometimes changes in new versions will result in errors until the upgrade process has been completed. Needless to say whenever I select complete upgrade it takes me to a page that tells me there's nothing to upgrade. I've tried clearing the cash in my browser, and on my dashboard. Is this something to do with a leftover file that can be deleted?
  9. Thanks marc, which files are missing please? I've just downloaded fresh files from client area and there are no folders in there I don't have. All the files "not found" in the error are fully present, apart from ones at the end of lines mentioning a folder called IPS, but there's no IPS folder in the core files either so I'm confused.

I've checked and all of the URLs listed exist in the exact place that is shown. However, I don't know what the folder IPS is supposed to be?
  11. Hi. I've been concerned for a while about the message I get in my dashboard regarding database tables, "It is strongly encouraged to ensure all of your database tables are using the InnoDB storage engine, and that your hosting provider has configured MySQL for InnoDB use. " A couple of times I've had a look into it, and even contacted support on my hosted service but I've not made much progress. I just clicked on the SQL toolbox link in my dashboard and it shows that roughly half of my tables are already in InnoDB and half are MyISAM. Is this normal? I'm confused as to how that is. So I presume I'm okay to assume that my server is already set up to use InnoDB. How do I convert the rest please? Many thanks
  12. Thank you for your reply. Yes I mean all of the settings for every aspect of the forum from the admin control panel. I have daily backups of the whole database but I just wondered if there was a separate backup for the customisations, which I've seen in many other programs. I presume there isn't one. It would be helpful to know where the customisations were kept so a complete restore of everything wouldn't be necessary. My backups are only done once every evening so if something was to happen the following afternoon and I needed to restore the settings I would lose any forum activity until that point. Having said all that I'm not sure what could happen to corrupt all of my settings. Maybe I'm being over concerned.
  13. Hi there. I cannot find how to save all of my forum customisations? I've spent hours going through all of the settings in the admin control panel but how can I back them up?
  14. Thanks Jim. No I don't think I did as I don't even know what it is. So presumably as long as you haven't enabled Ajax pagination you don't need to enter anything in there. I have the Google analytics code in Site/ Features/ Integrations and it seems to be working okay.
  15. Hi. I just found the above description in Advanced Configuration/ Page Output setting. I'm trying to get my head around what it actually means. Does it mean that when people visit the forums and browse through different topics the content is dynamically generated so Google only registers one page view?

  17. Hi Jim. What possible reason could there be for changing tabs when the user has specifically selected to be in a specific tab in order to carry out work? There surely can't possibly be any reason or advantage to do that? I'm just stunned that no one seems to agree it's a terrible way of working and leads to legitimate members and content being deleted.
  18. Hi Jim. I'm quite upset about this because I reported it years back. Please see what I mean. You go to members and there are tabs for ALL - LOCKED - BANNED - SPAMMERS - VALIDATING - ADMINISTRATORS Click on banned and delete a member. The page refreshes delete the next banned member and you just deleted a legitimate member and all their content because when the page refreshed the control panel puts you back in the ALL tab but it's not remotely easy to realise. Surely this can't be right or intended? Why does the tab need to change when you delete a member?
  19. I just started doing this and have deleted at least one genuine member. Is there a way to undo? I reported this problem some years back but nothing has changed and I forgot about it. When you go to banned or spammers the dashboard shows a list of banned or spammers. At the end of each member there is a delete account button. When you delete an account the page refreshes the list - BUT it has taken you to the "All" tab and when you delete the next one you are deleting a legitimate member but you think you are still in the Banned tab that you selected. Can you please get this changed? It's surely a terrible way to work. If you select a tab to view spammers you should stay in that tab until you click a different tab. I posted this suggestion a couple of years ago but it's not been changed. If there's no undo I will have to restore my forum from last night.
  20. Excellent thanks. It does seem a bit strange that the system allows someone to become a grand master by spamming. Couldn't the software flag up suspicious activity like a member messaging a suspicious amount of people? Anyway I've disabled messenger completely now. I suppose "private" messages are a delicate subject for you to control. One last question - how can I get rid of these messages or will that be covered in the "delete all their content" option after flagging as spammer?
  21. Thanks Jim. I used to get notifications whenever someone signed up so I could keep an eye out for suspicious characters and signups from countries notorious for spam but not where my forum is aimed at. I cannot find how to turn this back on? Spent 10 mins looking.
  22. Thanks Jim. I have the Spam Prevention set up well I thought. I have it set to flag to me for review anyone who scores more than 1. Apparently they only scored 1. I also have it set to immediately delete everything and ban them when flagged as a spammer. I've been running your forums for well over 10 years, I didn't even realise Messenger was on. I presume it makes sense to disable it but doesn't the forum software scan for spam in messages or is that impossible?
  23. Yikes. I only had 2 complaints and one was just yesterday. I disabled messenger this afternoon. I thought I already had disabled it ages back but it wasn't. Wondering how they got through to make an account and send so much spam?

  25. Hi Jim. I'm only used to the old ticket based support so apologies. This is the first time I've needed support since they moved to forums. I don't quite understand what the problem is as when I create a technical support account it creates one with Display Name: IPS Temp Admin Email: nobody@invisionpower.com and a Password: ******** I don't know how you get that password. I deleted the other one and created a new one.
