Manual Upgrade Clean-up (Upgrade but only keeping necessary old files.)

I'm having trouble with an upgrade and have to attempt a manual upgrade anyhow, so I'd like to basically delete all website files (backed up of course) except just the old directories and files that are necessary to keep. My root website directory is a hot mess of old former website software files, etc. Over 33,000 files! Can anyone help me determine what directories should be kept? "uploads", etc? Thank you!

P.S. I only have 'Pages' and no other applications.

The best way is to compare the list of folders/files on your server with the list from the ZIP file you download from the client area for the manual upgrade.

 

However, if you don't have any 3rd party modifications installed, it might just be easier to remove all files except /plugins and /uploads, and then re-upload a fresh set of files from the ZIP file.

 

Anyway, be sure to always take a backup before doing this kind of cleanup.

I backed everything up and then deleted everything except the 'uploads' folder. The upgrader complained about the 'convert' folder so I must have had that installed for some reason. But otherwise it worked out great. Thanks gain.
