IPS doesn't need to be installed in the sites root directory if you're self hosted!

Yes that is correct, before the change to 4.0 I believe, a lot of communities ran www.mysite.com/forums. Now with modernisation of the software we can install it in the root directory and select which apps act a default landing page.
