Is there a way to use the auto promotion tool to demote a member to inactive? Or does that not work since the status only updates when a member logs in?

I have a problem that some members are promoting stuff in their signature and then never come back online. I know that I can turn off signatures for new members but that feels like a dirty way and user unfriendly. 

Does anyone have a good suggestion concerning this problem?
