crabpaws Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 IPB 4.x adds a step to the process for moving a post from one topic to another, making it a subcategory of Split. As moving a post is a far more frequent moderation action than Split, the process should be streamlined for Move. It should be in the topic action menu (bottom of image). (The default choice in Split is set to splitting the topic. Following the rule of expediting the more common action, Move should be the default -- if it is absolutely impossible to streamline Move by putting it in the topic action menu.)
crabpaws Posted June 30, 2017 Author Posted June 30, 2017 Rather than make Move a subset of Split, it would have been more intuitive and elegant to make Split a subset of Move. Move - Move posts into another topic <-- default, display box for URL or topic number, requires no additional clicks - Split posts into a new topic <-- upon selection, display box for new topic title, requires one extra click on radio button
Rhett Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 When referencing moving/splitting posts from a topic, it's the same function, split and move are one in the same. You could rename split to move if needed really, the function is one in the same though.
crabpaws Posted July 1, 2017 Author Posted July 1, 2017 Whether labeled Split or Move, the default on the function is set to the less likely action. Usability best practices advise setting defaults to the most common action.
Rikki Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 I think it's an incorrect assumption on your part that moving a post to a different topic is the most common action. In our experience, the tool is most often used to start a new topic where an existing one has gone off-topic. Moving posts to another conversation - where they will then be out of context - is not nearly as common.
