Invision Community 4: SEO, prepare for v5 and dormant account notifications By Matt Monday at 02:04 PM
welshtony Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 Hi all, So I have tried to upgrade to IP.Board 4.*** in the past and failed due to my hosting provider not having what was needed on there server. I have just had a renewal through for the next 3 years and as it has gone up by over 700% in price in now looking into new hosts. This thread isn't to look into new host but what I would like to know is if I found a new host that supplied what is needed for 4.current version would I be able to set things up on the new server and when its all set up just easily migrate my current site straight over? I am currently using 3.4.8 Thanks in advance.
ASTRAPI Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 You can get a vps or a dedicated server and then you will have full control on what you install use on the server
opentype Posted November 17, 2016 Posted November 17, 2016 I did exactly that – combined the 3.4 to 4.x upgrade with a server move. So yeah, you can do that. It’s actually even very practical, since you put the old site in maintenance mode, do the upgrade on the new server and in case there is trouble, you can continue with the old site and try again later.
welshtony Posted November 17, 2016 Author Posted November 17, 2016 Due to cost's I will most likely go shared server as tbh our forum ins't used allot, main thing that is used is Nexus if im honest due to our members now using a facebook group instead of the forum. Ah that's brilliant news, So I would need to put 3.4 on the new server then the upgrade rather than just sticking the 4.x on the new server? And yeah that was my thoughts exactly, I have till end of december left with iPage so I have a few weeks to find a new host and hopefully get everything up and running.

Yes, that’s what I did. I did several dry runs in advance where I took a snapshot of the old (still open and running) site, installed it on the new server (with the host’s default domain), ran the upgrade and checked everything. After I was confident it works, I put the old site in maintenance mode, started it all again and after the upgrade was done and running I changed the domain settings of the 4.x installation and the DNS settings on the old server so traffic would be routed to the new server.
welshtony Posted November 20, 2016 Author Posted November 20, 2016 Thank you. I am looking for a list of server recommended specs, All I seem to be able to find is specs for 4.0 i.e. mysql 5.5 or higher php 5.4 or higher apache or other web server xcache or others If I was to install 3.4.7 then upgrade then id need specs for 3.4.7 also? I am messaging companies to see if they meet the recommended requirements 1st before choosing a new company. Thanks
